Do any of you realise?

Why give up pick 19 when there is a great possibility and chance of recruiting a gun young player who will serve our club for the next 12 years?
I'm interested in how many of these guns have been picked up at 19 in the draft and how many have not?

The recruitment of McMahon will see Newman and Raines into the midfield! Or dont you get it?

I don't get it.

Newman and Raines have been pretty good in the backline. Why not leave them there and draft midfielders?

Since 1997, #19 Picks

1997 - Chris Obst
1998 - Nick Davis
1999 - Brad Green
2000 - Jason Cloke
2001 - Jason Gram
2002 - Troy Selwood
2003 - David Mundy
2004 - Ryan Willits
2005 - Courtenay Dempsey
2006 - Shaun Grigg

Looks pretty good to me.

"If you think Newman is our next gun midfielder - then you have no idea." maverick...
what exactly do you mean by that...? ???

( sorry..coudntl get the quote thingy to work)

I think newman would be exactly what we need to move into the midfield, tough, good penetrating kick and wins his own ball. Would help foley and cogs immensley.

Gibbs of carlton will be a midfielder in time they tried him there early in the year and it didn't work, they then put him in the backline which i thought he did good. When he grows and matures he will find his way into the midfield. Guys like Casserley, White etc now have to be put in the back line and move guys like newman and raines if need be in to the midfield. We need more rotations and i also agree that connors and edwards will be future midfielders who can win their own ball.

All the people calling out for this to happen, are now whinging.

No wonder players like Judd dont pick our team.

Because we have the most uptight, close-minded, pessimistic supporters out there.

FFS give the bloke a chance!

Bookmark this thread, as Jordy will stick it up all your *smile* come years end ;)

If you think Newman is our next gun midfielder - then you have no idea.

If you think players like Judd dont pick the Tigers because of the supporter base - then you have no idea.

Well said Big Mav, you saved me the effort.

Newman and King out of defence and into the middle quicksmart. I spoke to Newman 3 years ago and he was desperate to get into the middle.

pretty decent list imo

I will give Terry till end of next year, if we are still down the bottom, i dont think he will be at tigerland anymore.

If he wants to recruit certain guys to improve and we dont it should be on him to take responsability for where the list is at.

We need talls everyone knows we need talls and he drafts 2 more flankers and possibly another with pick 2 that leaves us 1 decent pick to get a kpp or ruck. He will fall on his own sword and we will have a new coach 2009 and hopefully a new football manager too.

The only good thing is we will get 2 early picks for the new coach to draft talls with.

Whats next year's draft like? Picks 1 and 2 for the taking. Only joking of course, would hate for us to attempt a Carlton next year.

Hoping like hell young Daniel Connors gets his arse into a huge preseason this summer.
The kids a bit of a headcase but has the talent to be a feral arsepick for us in the middle.

What you don't seem to realise is, yeah McMahon isn't a bad player. He is quick, neat kick but he certainly isn't a champion, far far from it who has been in the system 7 years now and who is 25 next year. He rarely wins his own ball, can't take a contested mark and is basically a link-up player with nice disposal. He isn't going to get any better, or the sort of player we desperately need and the Bulldogs must be now laughing with the pick they got for him. You think the Dogs would let such an important player go? Why do we continually aim so low and sell ourselves short? Why give up pick 19 when there is a great possibility and chance of recruiting a gun young player who will serve our club for the next 12 years? With Miller & Wallace in charge we're going nowhere. They only care about thier own welfare/wellbeing. Both know if we were to finish bottom or 2nd last again next year, they would virtually be out the door; hence their decision to get a ready made player who can have an immediate impact, knowing very well that an 18 yr old would take a few years to show his worth. If Wallace, from day 1 had not decided to compromise our long term future and stick to a solid plan of obtaining the best talent through the draft system, then i would have great optimism for our long-term and immediate future. This has once again been dashed. Whatever happened to Wallace's promise of: "For far too long the Richmond football club has traded away picks for recycled players from other clubs...", etc...?

GO TIGES!!!
There is absolutely no guarantee that a player taken at 19 in this draft in particular will be equal or better than McMahon.

Then we should give away every single draft pick we get on the same basis - that there is no guarantee that any will be better than established players already playing in the league. What we can guarantee though with McMahon is after seven years in the system is that he is not going to grow taller, or become more accountable, or develop a stronger body, or become an inside midfielder, or become a KPP etc. A handy pick-up perhaps but not someone that addresses a core need of the side.

As an established player though he does however address the core need of Miller and Wallet for immediate potential improvement. He will never be an A-grader, he'll never help Richmond win a premiership, but he might help those two keep their jobs for another year if he helps the graph move in the opposite direction. A drafting move that has mediocrity written all over it...

Obviously was just more BS by the king of spin-doctoring. It all about getting another ready made mediocre player to add to an already mediocre list (ie think adding another deck chair to the Titanic before another shuffle). Wallet and Miller still want to be clever and they still want to do deals and they are still looking for short-cuts. Despite finishing wooden spooners after three years of failure (more for Miller of course), the last thing they want to do is totally invest in youth because in the positions they are in that would be as good as writing their own letters of resignation. They personally need instant results next season or their positions will become untenable, and anyone who doesn't believe their immediate self-interest isn't a factor now in their recruiting strategy and list management is kidding themselves.

Here, here. Agree with all of the above. This is heart-breaking for us who love this club.

Oh right...so because there is no guarantee, we're just gonna forever take the 'safe' option because we fear our picks will never be good? How are we meant to ever build a premiership team with this mentality? Nice one...

Watching McMahon this year was terrible, he constantly turned the ball over with his beautiful kick, he was consistantly beaten by his opponent and squibbed out on most contests, welcome aboard Jordan!
