Do we get to rookie-elevate now?

Considering that Gas had been picked this week I am confused with his comments about his reasons for leaving immediately. He obviously didn't have a lot of confidence in his own ability short term.
 
My take from the conflicting evidence is that Gas was offered what virtually ammounted a farewell game this week.  I find it strange to select him but let him know he was being taken over by the kids and would be at Coburg the next week. What if he played this week and was BOG? There just seem to be some pieces of the jigsaw missing to me.
