I must admit, that's higher than I would have expected :o

Still it's not much for a captain. There are 17 players in list that were selected by more than 80%. This would put Sugar as a fringe player.

n.b. I modified my orignial comment to 'not clearly in our best 22'.

Johnson is in our best 22.
Wouldn't be at most clubs but he is in ours.

And you have the cheek to have a go at Claw....... ;D ;D ;D :P :rofl

I think if Johhno can get fully fit for next season he will still be in the best 22, but seems to have struggled for pace a bit last year too, but his late season form showed he might still have a bit to offer when fully fit.

Now now gussy, that sounds a touch hypocritical.

If I recall correctly you bagged Sugar all last season so don't come on here and pretend you smell of roses. :devilangel

Yep because he was average last year, but making some allowance given the post someone earlier about the extent of pain in his hand. However critical though, still think he is in our best 22.

Unlike your man Schulz (or my man meyer ;D)

I have a lot of ground to make up after my predictions on Krak you know. ;D (Which I am surprised you haven't reminded me about recently :hihi)

My point is injured or not he would have been dropped(rested) by most clubs due to poor form because they could afford to cover him.
We sadly couldn't, not that him playing made much difference.

At almost 30 Sugar is not getting any younger and the reality is he'll likely be carrying some sort of injury for the rest of his days. How will he respond to that?

Also your point about his pace is valid and at times last year his disposal bordered on laughable (not to mention the backwards kick to open the year).
I have been a big supporter of the skipper in the past but right now I see a player in decline and one or two games at the end of a forlorn season won't change my opinion.

Who? :tumbleweed ;)

Lets just give the captaincy to Lids and get all the growing pains out of the way now so that in a couple of years when we are ready to fire he will be a ready made leader.
He will be 21, he is a confident kid and it may be what he needs to take his game to the next level. It's been done before and worked effectively and with a young and up and coming list it is only fitting that we have a young up and coming captain. Sugar has done well in trying times but now is the time to hand the batton on, what the club doesn't need next year is a Vandenberg type situation where the media speculates about whether the skipper is in the best 22.

What we need is at least half a dozen players really pressing for the captaincy, and showing it in their footy, inspiring others to do the same. From there, the choice becomes easier.

Six months ago I nominated contenders as Simmonds, Tuck, Polak and Foley.

If any changes are to be made I think it will have to be after the preseason, so that we know if players have recovered from injury and are at full capacity. Simmonds has to look a million dollars by then. If he does then perhaps make the change then. If not, leave Johnno in charge.

Tuck was disappointing by his own standards for much of this year. Has he recovered from the leg injury which restricted his kicking? If he has then I expect him to really produce the goods, with Coughlan taking a lot of the heaviest workload in close. I still rate him like his old man. Greater confidence and leadership is what he needs to show early to warrant consideration.

Polak...... too early yet. Has some good skills but two great weaknesses. His man-on-man work and kicking for goal must improve markedly. Will be interesting to see how well he presents physically after the preseason. No chance for a leadership role in 2008.

Foley........ if RFC wants to bite the bullet then this kid may be the one.

Looking ahead and anticipating Simmonds is 100% by Round 1 then I'd plump for him as captain in place of Johnno. I'd then choose between Tuck and Foley for vice captain after assessing them at that time.

Reasons:-

Simmonds(experience, strength and coolness under pressure)
Tuck(breeding, strength and endurance)
Foley(class, desire and work ethic)

hmmm...wow..that was some intersting reading....for a start..the person back there who commented that newman was the worst defender of the year...in the league....what the?? watch a few matches again mate...

now...as for the captaincy...unless kane steps down next season i think he will remain captain..he is hugely respected by the players..and as someone else said..itis not all about on field performance....but kane actually did his job pretty well this year in a dismal year for the club.

as for who will be the next captain...from the mouth of our captain...chris newman

from the mouth of nathan brown....chris newman

from my mouth...chris newman...:) he has the respect of the players and the leadership qualities..the young guys look up to him, the older guys are his good mates and the coaches love him..and as someone said earlier..he is definitely being groomed..he has been tested personally and physically this year and past with flying colors...as for being media savvy...does anyone remember the interview on TV when he broke his leg...he spoke really well and i know that was unrehearsed and he had no idea of the questions he he was going to be asked...he was very cool about the whole thing. he was also sent for the handball competition where he was totally at ease on live tv...cogs will be up there too

would love to see richo captain for a year...dont know if it will happen though

he will be great....

as for foley....let the guy have a few good years first...then see what the feel is around the club...he is an extremely hard worker but that does not make him a leader on and off the field...

Newman is one of the better players. I was suprised how well Newman did after coming back from a serious leg break.

At least Newman has a crack.

Lids needs to get to the first level before he gets to the next level. Improved in 2007, but needs to show alot more desire to be considered for captaincy.
