PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I've read a number of threads debating the issue of our dearth of players between the 22 to 24 and the 25 to 27 year age groups.

Yes, in a perfect world, with a perfect list, we should have many players in these groupings, but we don't.

<180cm      180-184      185-189     190-194      195-199      200+
25 to 27yo:
Need 2        Need 3        Need 3       Need 2        Need 1        Need 1
None           Chaffey       Johnston     ---------        Simmonds   Knobel
                   Brown          J.Bowden   ----------
                   --------          Tivendale
                                       Hilton(gone)

22 to 24yo:
Need 2        Need 3        Need 3        Need 2        Need 1       Need
Krakouer     Pettifer        Coughlan    P.Bowden    Hall             Optional
Rodan         Hyde            Tuck            -----------
                   Newman       ----------      Morrison(gone)

So establishing that our list does have a few gaps in this area, do we really need to fill these gaps temporarily.

We are filling our gap in 190-194 mobile kpps by using twilight players, defenders Gaspar & Kellaway and forward Richardson; and also by elevating juniors such as Thursfield, Schulz & Moore.

So how is our ability to cover postions on the ground?

B: Newman                Gaspar                  Kellaway
    Hartigan                 Thursfield              Moore

HB: J.Bowden                Hall                        Hyde
       Jackson                Schulz                    Roach

C: Deledio                   Tuck                       Tambling
     Polo                        Coughlan               Raines

HF: Pettifer                  Richardson             Brown
      Meyer

F: Stafford                   P.Bowden               Krakouer
     Pattison

R: Simmonds                Johnston                Foley
    Knobel                     Chaffey                   Rodan

McGuane & Limbach probably aren't advanced enough for senior footy.
And that still gives us a choice of Morrison, Archibald, Hilton, Tivendale & Gilmour that we could clear off the list.

Hope I haven't left anyone off.

Of these, the only one that we really can't cover for is Richo, but that's our own fault because we haven't recruited to cover for him. But even then, if he did break down, both Simmonds & Schulz should be available to cover somewhat, or though not fully.

So it comes back to the question, do we really need to go out and find an experienced player, for a year or two, to cover ourselves?
Maybe we do, maybe we don't.
Personally, if the right type of player became available through the PSD, then maybe it could be a wise move. But it would need to be the right player. No good picking up a might be player.

Now you can see the importance of picking up a tall key forward with our first choice.
And how shallow are we for key defenders?
And why we need some rookies.

Ah well, interesting times.

I welcome your comments. As long as these are nice.  ;)
