Stanton carved us up yesterday. Is rated by the Bummers, finished third in their B&F last year and is still only 19.

Fiora did jack *smile* in his time at the RFC. Where's the comparison?

Fiora? :rotfl
I think it's a valid point he makes, TofO. Fiora couldn't get his own leather. When he received it, he'd miss the target. You give it to the 'receiver' because they're more likely to hit the target. These two are exceptions because they made position to receive, and then kicked it ten metres away from the target. Fiora was worse, but it's still a valid comparison.

I find this topic really interesting. I'm not a football genius, but I do rate Essendon.

They will make the eight as sure as this board will explode after our first thumping - nothing could be more predictable.

Any team with Lloyd, Hird, Fletcher, Lucas, McPhee and the Johnsons is a great chance - that lot is way better than what we have.

Add Kepler Bradley, who will be a dead-set star (and make several clubs look like idiots for not picking him before the bummers did), some exciting dashers in Lovett, Lovett-Murray and some promise with Laycock, Monfries etc.

Top it off with the Master Coach of the AFL (25 years for Sheedy and a 66% winning ratio - unbelievable!), truckloads of pride and professionalism and they will probably make the top 6 and possibly the top 4.

Laugh at me all you want, but I reckon come the finals this thread will represent the height of wishful thinking.

If I'm wrong, feel free to heap it on me - I don't WANT the bummers to do well - but I have this awful feeling I won't be!

So they're both receivers, fair enough.
But the comparison stops there. Stanton's started well & is improving, Fiora didn't do either of those things ::).

Since comparisons between Richmond & Essendon are being made, thought I might repost something I researched towards the end of last year sometime. Just for those who might have a minute interest in my ramblings:

Out of interest I did a bit of research on that claim that a club like Essendon played young players at the expense of performance on the field and these are my results:

Age Ess Rich

18 1 player for 18 games 1 player for 22 games
19 4 for 44 6 for 42
20 5 for 35 3 for 13
21 2 for 13 1 for 6
22 5 for 72 1 for 20
23 5 for 48 3 for 61

On these stats we actually played 2 more players and the same number of games between 18-19 year olds. Up to the age of 21 we played one less player, however the number of games played gaps up. At 22-23 we are lacking players. I think this probably shows the damage done by the Frawley era but from what I can see this is being addressed satisfactorily.

I am very interested that you picked out Essendon as a team that has foresaken onfield performance for the experience of younger players. Essendon have of all teams have been one who have successfully over a long period of time managed to remain very competitive not because they played young players but because they maintained a balanced mix of young and old players and by bringing in the younger brigade sparingly rather than throwing them to the wolves. Essendon played 19 players this year between 23 and 27 years old. If that core couldnt do better then what they did this year, then you'd have to question Essendon's short-term future. Its gonna take a master stroke from the master coach, Sheedy, to make something happen quickly this time. I like the Tigers future a bit better at this stage.

Stanton is a very good player already. Watched him last year and was very impressed. Is a natural footballer who reads the play very well. Would love him at the Tiges.

GO TIGES!!!

Stanton is a RECEIVER. Which is fine... but as a receiver his job is to hit targets and he rarely does that.
So Stanton is a receiver, big deal.

From all accounts his disposal has improved, as you'd hope from a youngster just embarking on his 3rd season. Sure we'll get a clearer indication come the regular season. However if it was one of our 19 year olds showing the same promise as this kid, we'd all be lauding him as the next big thing at Tigerland.

Time will tell.

Spot on, would he get a game in the TIgers side right now?

Of coure he would and we would be putting massive wraps on him. Let's hope Tambo can follow in his footsteps.

I liked these responses the best.

claw, who will finish higher... richmond or essendon?
essendon mainly because all teams have injuries and when we cop them and it wont take many to our better players we fall away big time.our kids are not ready yet and we have to many ordinary duds who have shown time and time again they are not capable of stepping up.i would go so far as to say if we dont win games early in the yr and injuries come we will be a good bottom 2 chance.

No i dont rate Essendon, but i rate them a damn site higher than our d u d infested side.

Nice one Craig. :hihi

Well, mathematically, Essendon could still finish above us...we're only 7 wins ahead of them, if they ran into some form and we started getting flogged regularly...claw could yet be right... ;)

sometimes i'm wondering if anyone in the media is on the same wavelength as the rest of us. why are the media pumping up essendon? mike sheahan rated essendon finals certainties (baring injuries) in his review last week, and i heard tony shaw on 3aw on saturday rate essendon very highly. he even went as far to say that essendon's kids are better than the kids at tigerland and hawthorn. i nearly choked on the air i was breathing as i could not believe my ears!!  :veryupset :veryupset :veryupset

Good early call Ian :clap :hihi

bloody spot on Ian 4.....I was thinkin to meself that the worse that the wayward cessna,s have gone this year, the more sympathy theyve attracted......fair dinkum...at least when the tigers get flogged..we go down in glory and a screamin heap...not like a crumpled bit of a tinfoil glider......Just cant seem to work out the world sometimes eh! ???

Fletcher not the player he was and heading backwards.
ditto Hird
Lloyd had an ordinary year last and i think gone are the days he dominated at full forward. With Fletcher not dominating ,the backline looks a bit fragile. They are a team of big names, but a lot of there "stars are starting to dim".They're a team that always seem to have a lot of injuries. Imo bottom 4 and would love to see it.
wasn't far off the mark myself!
