Richmond football club has the biggest supporter base in Australia (non members)
Unfortunately a large % are feed up with the lack of success thus dont show their support
All we need to do is win a flag real soon...and watch the yellow and black COVER melbourne & Australia.

alleluia ans amen!

Similar feedback from our kids primary school at an event a few weeks ago.
All the kids wore their footy jumpers and a surprisingly large representation of Tigers.

It is the parents, My two girls will be tigers. :spin

We are huge! Just need to win games and finals and you'll see... the woodwork will buckle and the bandwagon will become a train!

The Wimmera is full of Tiger supporters....yes it is a very strong Essendon and Geelong area but there are a lot of kids wearing their yellow and black with pride!

Kids love Tigers.
We have one of the best mascots in the AFL. The best.
That mascot must be doing something pretty spectacular to be maintaining support from the kids.

I'm a 10+ year member in the 20 somethings and I grew up with my dad taking me to Melbourne games. Don't ask how I became a tiger member, it just happened and this was in the early 90's when we were at rock bottom. ???

Good on you, just don't give up on them now, like my niece (a 20 something) she ditched the Tiges and went and barracked for the Dees..... :rofl

Just a parenting tip.

I have 2 children: 3 and 1. The 1yo not conscious of the fact that she's a Tiger member yet. Nonetheless both are members from days after their births.

Of course they have no real option as to who they barrack for, but just to help things along, I always just mention/ make a big deal of anything we see that is yellow and black, or has anything to do with tigers, or if we are passing through Richmond. Also, imbibing the warm, child freindly, tigerish atmosphere of the Family Day is a great way of ensuring the love of all things Richmond for the next generation. (Get little Johnny or Suzie to take a friend! (Buy friend a badge.))

Oh, this is important too. Never mention other teams or their players. If my 3yo asks "who is this or that" in the paper and it's... say... L Franklin, I just say "Not sure" (or if it's N Stevens, I might say "nobody") and turn the page/ change channel.

---

I believe that the hardship that we have endured since the early 80s has strengthened the resolve in Tigers to not give up, and to persevere with more resiliance than counterparts from other success challenged teams. When we win, the Tigers will be bloody huge, but what I think is that the resilience alone of Tiger fans is enough to ensure that we will have a good following in the meantime. (Eg. attendance in 07 was very good for the spoon side).

I'm taking notes Caspar. It's a pity the jumpsuit from the Tigerden is so cr@p...

And they've run out. I'm trying to squeeze my 15month old into a 6mth old suit.

Due to his birth being a week late, my son was actually a member before he was born. Sad, so sad.

As for the brainwashing, I find that encouraging him to play with his Tigger soft toy helps the whole Tiger mindset to entrench itself.

Sounds like you're preparing him for a lifetime of tiger torment Baloo. Wise move!

i recently lived in a block of 8 flats in geelong and both neighbours on either side of me were richmond supporters.
so 3 out of 8 ain`t bad,especially in geelong.

Good thread.

I live in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and the Tigers have a huge following here. I have added 6 children to the mix. My 2 sons and my 4 nieces and nephews :clap

not many up here in Darwin, mostly bombers, port, hawks and eagles at kids school and footy games. I grew up in northern tassie and had heaps of friends who were supporters, including my large extended family, Dad (with 10 brothers and sisters) and my Pop were all tiger mad, except uncle Keith (who we swear is clinically insane !) who goes for the pies, have to say my uncle was pretty ballsy !

That's exactly the subtle mind play I was suggesting. No force, just enthusiasm and encouragement.

Force comes later. (Think years down th etrack. Son: "Daddy, all my front runner friends barrack for Hawthorn, I want to barrack for them too". Baloo: "Well remember meeting those players on th efamily day? Didn't you like them? What was wrong with them? Look, If you want to change teams i will take you to training where you can explain it to Richo, Lids, Chimp, Terry, . After this I will not be able to guarantee you transport to any games, ever.")

PS Obviously a smart Tiger, one week less to wait for our next flag.
