This is my idea to stop teams tanking for picks.

The bottom 8 play a knockout cup for draft picks.

9th Vs 16th - 9th wins
10th Vs 15th - 10th wins 9th Vs 13th - 9th wins 9th Vs 10th - 9th wins first pick
11th Vs 14th - 11th wins 10th Vs 11th - 10th wins the rest on wins
12th Vs 13th - 13th wins and percentage.

Plus it puts teams that havnt played finals much (Richmond) in a finals atmosphere and you wouldnt get all these operations to players happening before the season is out. The priority picks can still be given like they do now or have an independent group of ex coaches and players to decide who needs picks.

Just an idea plus we would get to see the Mighty Tiges play in September.

Could be good for the fans, tv networks and the AFL for revenue and good for those teams to develop some finals like atmosphere.

No the winners get the early picks, if 8th wins the knockout cup it gets 1st pick, the runner up gets 2nd pick and so on, Semi finalist get 3rd and 4th pick going on percentage, picks 5,6,7and eight to the first round losers on percentage.

The trick is priority picks where to put them at the start or after 8 if qualify for first round or after 16 or not at all, personally would like some sort of priority pick.

Top 8 just in order othey finish.

Just an idea thats all.

Personally I am over the priority pick.

I appreciate what it is trying to do, but its too big a prize.

Get rid of the priority pick.

If you want something as a helper for weaker sides, maybe an extra rookie slot for the next year (picked after all others).

i see... that's interesting

by the way i think 8th needs to be renamed 13th in your original post

Just fixed it i was a little tired last night when i typed it out, it would fix some of that tanking anyway.

Agree, just get rid of it. Doesn't work anyhow. Carlscum have had so many I've lost count, they are still *smile*.

I think the best way to stop this ridiculous situation is to award all draft picks after Rd 15, when everybody has played each other once.
It would also give clubs more time to decide who they're going to pick-up.

Too many teams are getting an easy run into the finals by playing teams that don't really want to win. I'm not saying the players don't want to win, but the Carlton coaching staff have left their corridor wide open whenever they look like a chance of winning.

This way after Rd 15 you can finish off the season positively no matter where you're positioned and not having to worry about barracking with your heart or your head. Its a shocking situation no supporter should have to go through. Melbourne have a lot to loose by winning this week.

I am amazed that the priority pick rule change was so obviously flawed from the start. The prolbem is that one or two games at the end of the season really effect the picking. The rule must be abolished or changed. If changed, the weighting has to be over the last 3 years AT LEAST. There are so many options that work.

Here's one I like :-
I would be more in favour of giving a priority pick to a team that hasn't made the finals in 4 straight seasons. In addition, you couldn't get one two years running. No team would tank at the option of making the finals. No one would even talk about it.

Another that'd go close just of the top of my head is the priority being decided based on a weighted bell curve average over the last three years. So games three years ago count a little, games last year count more, and games this year count the most, except for the final 6 games of the the curent year where they again count very little. The important point being the pick is not determined so much by the final 6 games. There can then be very little chance of any talk of tanking because the last 6 or so games don't effect the pick much. Of course the average wins would have to be less than, say 5.

Ok a little complex, but that's whats needed.

Or an average of the games won in the last 3 years, along with the last 5 games of any season only being counted if

Priority picks should only be given to teams that are genuinely crap over a long period of time. There should be no rules, just leave it to the AFL's discretion.

By my reckoning, Richmond have been routinely crap for so long they should get three each year for the foreseeable future. Carlton might qualify for one in a couple of years, but not yet. They have a long way to go for their quarter century of mediocrity. No-one else should get a look-in for years.

Nicely put Clay. Not sure if round 15 is the go, but I reckon you're on to something. Good work..
