Dusty / Dimma relationship

Hi all, long time stalker first time poster. Hope I survive my first outing.

Looking back at images of a young Dusty being drafted, essentially the first player in after Dimma's appointment, it occurs to me that after 244 games Damien Hardwick is still the only head coach he has played under at AFL level. This is actually a bit of a rarity.

I hope you guys will correct me if I'm wrong, but a bit of a quick check tells me that the Gordon Coventry/Jock McHale partnership looks like the most enduring player/coach relationship in VFL/AFL history with 306 (or 305, I'll explain the discrepancy) games. I've checked some of the obvious ones - Harvey/Pagan, Tuck/Jeans, Hodge/Clarkson. None of them really come close. Even Fletcher/Sheedy ended at about 286 games. I'm thinking that if Hardwick maintains the desire to keep coaching, and Martin keeps playing, they could well own this record within 3 seasons, certainly 4.

The Coventry/McHale discrepancy stems from the 1930 Grand Final in which McHale was absent with illness. He's still credited with being that seasons Premiership coach, but he wasn't even in attendance at the ground that day, and Bob Rush took charge of the Pies. With this in mind, it's also possible, maybe with some dispute, that Dustin Martin could become the first player to play from debut to game number 300 under the one coach.

I know I'm jumping the gun and a lot can happen in 3 seasons, but their relationship as player and coach is one already celebrated by Tigers fans, and to have actual statistics back up what most of us already think would make celebrating their relationship even sweeter. Anyway, I've nerded out enough. If any of you have any data that says different I'd honestly love to know. Thanks guys.

Certainly more of a rarity these days too as some of those coaches way back when were in their positions for decades, Jock McHale and Norm Smith spring to mind, but mainly Jock McHale.

They do seem to have a good relationship, and beneficial for both of them, and us.

Interesting, Hardwick has earned the right to coach through our next rebuild if he wants to which will start in earnest when Cotch, Jack, Edwards, Grimes, Dusty and Astbury are all retired

Baring something terrible, Dusty is contracted for another 4? years and over these next 4 years the Hardwick / Martin partnership could become the most successful ever If we keep tracking the way we are now.

welcome to the addiction that is PRE

Welcome aboard BrummieTiger.
Dimma and Dusty's bond looks to be getting stronger and stronger. I love how Dusty ran to Dimma straight after the siren in this years GF, a very special moment.

The mind boggles at how sick old McHale must've been to miss a grand final...

Rightly or wrongly, McHale is credited with the 1930 GF among his 714 games, same as Sheedy was credited with a game he was absent for with Gary O'Donnell filling in.

Who was Roughead's other coach?
Hmmm, it was Bolton but the column doesn't work the way I thought it did. It's a cumulative count of coaches so for the first 192 games, it's 1 for Roughead, then 2 for the five games under Bolton and the last 86 under Clarkson. There's a separate column with the coach ID in it. Will fix shortly.

Welcome aboard @BrummieTiger. You're so right about their relationship and you only have to watch the post grand final press conferences to see it. There's a mutual love in goin on.
Also, it proves that though Dustin doesn't say much, when he does, he's not the knucklehead many in the football world portray him as.

This shows how resilient Dusty has been over his career so far. 7 more games than Jack and 26 more than Shedda, but three years and two coaches less

Nice one Lee. Surprised he's pipped Stynes, and surprised Stynes only just makes the top 10

But scratch my last comment about the comparison with Jack and Sheds - i read that as total games, not games under Dimma.

I'm taking a guess that there was probably a few at the hawks who only played under Clarkson also.

Welcome Brummie.

I thought Jack Titus might be there, he hardly ever missed and held the consecutive games record for years, maybe never got to 244.
