Just looking at a newspaper I kept the day after Jack Dyer passed away.  In the sports section there are some great words attributed to our Captain Blood, Jack Dyer. Thought you all may like to re-read them.

If you dont mind umpire!

I wont say anything in case i say something

Things aren't the same now there are five teams in the four

An Essendon supporter is a Collingwood supporter who can read and write

Bamblett made a great debut today and an even better one last week

A champion team will always beat a team of champions, unless the team of champions is very, very good

His long arms reached up like giant testicles

I hate Collingwood so much I wont even watch a black and white movie

He's a good ordinary footballer (on Carlton's Peter Bosustow)

A bit of bad luck for Bob (on the death of former Carlton captain Bob Chitty)

He's so scared he sleeps with the lights on

Is it you or your brother who isn't here? (to one half of identical twins he asked to dress differently at training)

He's on an angle so tight the ball got stuck between the goalposts

I want you to pair off in three's (to the Richmond players)

He's loping around the wind like a giant tarantulope (on a particularly spindly ruckman)

The French Riverina (mixing up his European and NSW Geography)

Bartlett's older than he's ever been before

Johnston missed one from the 10 yard square- it was impossible to miss that

Henshaw passes the ball to Kelly and Kelly gives the Henshaw to glendinning

Thats the beauty of being small- your hands are closer to the ground

There weren't too many best mans on the ground

He tuckled strongly by Tack

He sets himself for a high mark- actually that was a low high mark

He's put the game beyond result

They've got a couple of good players in Harvey

A rather difficult goal kicked very easily

They should've kicked 12 goals in that 1/3 quarter because they were right on top and hardly did a thing right

Flanagans trying to use pace he hasn't got

The goalposts are moving that fast I cant keep up with play

The Richmond Banner the next match also had the most emotional message I've ever seen on it.

Heaven's football team can now take the field because your captain has arrived- Jack Dyer 1913-2003

Another favourite of mine was " he's not where the ball 'aint" in reference to a player with a high work rate.

Great stuff balmyarmy! Here,s another couple to throw into the mix.......

At footy training...."You blokes go and pair off in three,s"

This dyerism definitely summed up the Blues last year in the Wizard Cup....

"Hmph!Theyre only March premiers!"

"The players of today are nuclear physiotherapists!"

God bless the great man! ;D ;D

Really miss his gossip grapevine....... the Bemm River report.

Old Louie would always chirp in with "where there's smoke there's Blue Cod" whatever that was supposed to mean :-\

What about when Jack used to commentate about a team going well...." They all seem to be going well at the present time".

Heard a classic told by Neil Roberts-seems he and Jack had a "session" after World of Sport and Jack was in quite a state. After leaving a pub and walking down a street in Melbourne a police officer recognising them and their "state" approached them and asked them how they were. Jack said words to the effect that he was feeling fine. The officer quized him-"do you know where you are"? Jack looked around and repied-"of course Constable-I am on the corner of Walk Dont Walk" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure if all our newcomers are aware there's a Jack Dyer tribute section on the main page of PRE that contains a lot of his quotes and newspaper tributes.

A good read on a rainy day.....like today, ha. ;D
