Am I alone here.

This has nothing to do about winning or losing, this is solely on our Game Style.

EXCITEMENT as a fan was the word we were all using, when we were witnessing the Hard running, back yourself and carry the ball style of play we have witnessed on a few occasions this year.

I was excited and thrilled regardless of us winning or losing. That was when we could Talk our Club and Players up. How refreshing that was.

Now the DEPRESSING part. Our style of the last few weeks, nearly the entire opposite to the above.

The Swans match was one of the most frustrating things I have seen this year. Between us and the umpires, It hit hard.

My point and question is do others feel like myself.

I used to want a win no matter what, or how it was achieved. Last week changed that.

I now don't want to win playing a style like last week.

I will take a 100 point flogging playing the running, back yourself , ball carrying footy than a win witnessing what I saw last week.

I wasn't depressed so much with the losing part, but more with the way we were playing.

THE TIGES are so much better than that.

Heres to hopefully talking up our team.

Thoughts

Agree, U2.

Our current style of play is boring crap. The players should be asked to back themselves - if it comes unstuck, so be it.

Also agreed u2.
The game against Sydney was one of the most boring games I have watched the Tigers play. Even before half time I was bored with it.
TW seems to have gone a bit overboard on the whole 'tempo footy' thing.

agree

boring game style, we are a team that relyes on bursts as well

wallace is trying to get us to slow the game down a lot and its not working, well it did once against crows

Yes, agree big time. Tempo footy has its place but we are going overboard and not creating scoring opportunities.

The Sydney game plan was disturbing and gave me the niggling feeling that if we keep it up, then we may just go nowhere.

Nothing worse than losing a boring, slow moving, dog-ugly game of footy.

richmond needs to develop different types of games styles
to fit with
1) the opposition
2) our strengthens and weakness
3) our players for the day
4) type of weather condtions
5) opposition strengthens and weakness

some days we will need to play that type of (boring) game, because it is all about winning!!

if you are happy about just running and a open game plans, how did you feel about matty white get picked up for running too far? (which in my iopinion, WAS NOT) turning over the ball and the swans getting another soft goal on us, at that time of the match?

yes the players have to back themselves along with the coachers, but they do have to keep in mind when to do it and when not too!!

TW has certainly changed his mindest regarding our style. It has probably dawned on him that playing attacking footy was going to win few games with the current list and has thus adopted a more defensive game plan. This tempo footy thing is a bit of a smokescreen for saying stacking the backline (or flooding as it is now called).

Even when 6 goals up against Port he conceded he was happy to protect the 6 goal lead in the last quarter.

Glaringly came unstuck against Freo - the win against Adelaide has perhaps become somewhat of a millstone around our necks.

The Divinyls said it all with their song "It's a fine line between pleasure and pain" :-\

Tempo footy is all good when you're infront but against the swans we were 5 goals down and we were chipping it round slowing it all down! WAT THE HELL!

We played attacking footy against the roos, port and the pies but the Geelong game and even the Essendon game stick out as games where we played on moved the ball and went all out...and thank god we did cause if we hadnt of against the bombers we wouldve lost it!

More to the point slowing the game down kills players like Raines, Deledio, Tambling, Polo, White, Hartigan, JON etc cause their natural instincts are to get the ball and go...and its so refreshing when they do. Classic example on Sat night was when Whitey had no options up the ground as nobody was presenting so he backed himself in killed off an opponent and yes ran to far....but to hell with that umpiring call cause i thought it was fantastic to see!

My congratulations to those out there who even got to see the Swans game at all. Not shown on free to air at all up in the Sunny state! I will have to take you word for it being a boring game. Copies of the game sent would be most appreciated ;) ;D

However I will not so quickly condemn TW for this - the Swans blew the Tigers outa the water last time when we used run and carry to break lines, and without adequate personel now I can happily accept he tried to do it differently this time.

Don't presume this is to be the only way Terry & co will coach the team in the games ahead. He's a lot smarter than that - and presumably smarter than some give him credit for. :o

Understood.

But its that type of game I just can't stomach anymore- win or lose.

Its depressing, and I just don't think my walls and TV will see the year out if it continues.

Just a thought

We have a very young side - a long football season - young bodies find it hard to go the distance - maybe TW & Co have picked up something from the training track about the "tiredness" of our young players and the game style is a plan to nuture them through this season to show them what it takes to be an AFL player for the entire season. Preparing their bigger stronger bodies for next year!

Maybe TW is picking his games where "he lets the Tiger loose" (like Collingwood - but that was after a 2 week break remember) so we can win the games that he percieves we can.

Maybe I expect too much from our young side - in the end I believe we have a coach who can read the game, the season extremely well and knows what is needed to build a finals team - and he is going about his business - and teaching the young players every step of the way! It may not be finals this year (still could be) but I reckon next year will see us giving a place in the finals one hell of a shake.

Saturday night against the Swans was very much one of those learning steps IMO..........RT

Those who overate both our list and our playrers as individuals, along with harbouring champagne expectations are the only ones who will be feeling crushed and heartbroken.

I for one am fairly happy with the position of the club and foremostly with our youngsters who are the future.

I'm also quite happy.
I thought if we were 8-8 with 6 games in Melbourne to go, then we were a chance....and nothing has changed.
All games are winnable...or we could get pumped by 100 in all of them... :hihi
But least the destiny is in our own hands if we're good enough.
(I picked us to finish 9th before the start of the season...wish I'd put $10 on it now! :-X)

I think the point in this thread is not about winning or losing but HOW we play in each game. I travelled from Qld to Sydney to watch the Tigers play on Saturday night. I didn't really expect us to win - but I did expect a contest. I was very disappointed with our performance - it was lacklustre and our game plan was so negative that i thought we had gone back to the Frawley days. I know Richo is not right and Browny is still along way from full fitness and we had some key players missing - Bowden, Cogs & Newman - but what was missing more than anything else was some spark. I'm not blaming individual players (as IMO this is not productive) but our game plan was negative and slow. It seemed to work right into Sydney's hands and they decimated us. The scoreboard did not reflect how badly we played.

I am hoping that the Melbourne & Sydney games are not demonstrative of where we are at as a club and that the usual end-of-season fade out is upon us cause i would find that very depressing. I think we are better than those two games suggest but we need to have a much more positive game plan if we are to be competitive in the next few weeks.

Let's hope TW throws a bit of caution to the wind and we start playing some exciting football again - regardless of the result or where we end up on the ladder.

Exactly. good post.

I think there is a bigger picture than the way Richmond plays and the boredom of this method of play. Personally I think games in general amongst all teams are more boring now than they used to be. It's the way the game is played these days. Its a keepings off at all costs mentality that has taken the best assets of the game away from the spectators. You still get your amazing hard fought matches but they seem to be harder and harder to find.

AFL are making our game crap...

too much tiggy touchwood...

although I wouldn't want it to go back to the 80's style of biifo, they should at least still let players contest the ball.

Joel Bowden getting rubbed out for a week, what a joke....

I am not bitter and twisted.... much
