Pretty hard to find any positives. One I would say is that at least we not in a position where our whole list is crap and where everyone is up and down. We have a group who have consistently played well. This is the core group we need to build around over the summer and the next year or two. Unfortunately there is an equal number that don't belong in the AFL. No need to mention names given another thread/poll. We know who they are.
Just some (obvious) observations:
1. We have no depth whatsoever (that goes for most of the Vic sides however). We need our best 18-22 playing every week which ain't gunna happen.
2. Without Cambo, Johnson and Cogs in the the same side together our midfield is no different to last year - i.e. scheissenhausen. We need another 3 midfielders (with pace).
3. Game Plan..uh..ummm... Would someone please show our coaching staff West Coast playing against Brisbane yesterday emphasizing the following:
Where a player would take a mark on the lead facing away from their own goal then offload to one of a number his teammates to either his left or right running AT PACE from the defensive side towards goal ready to receive the handball and break the lines. Then that player would pass to another leading teammate and the process is repeated. Don't have players taking an eternity to turn around slowing the movement of the footy forward and giving the opposition time to man up and/or flood.
Where a player either running or with a mark forward of centre spots up a teammate 40m out NOT players continually always bombing long to the same tall forward. Gee I wonder how every defence in the league knows the ball is going to go to Richo and has numbers at the contest and we don't :
and then rebound so easily. We must gift to the opposition the most counter-attack goals in the league. Gee I wonder why.
Where one forward would run (taking his opponent with him) AWAY from another forward to create space for him to lead into and mark.
At stoppages, a player would run straight at and block the opponent/tagger's run so his teammate can get for the footy and have just enough time and space to deliver not under pressure.
That is 21st century footy. Not the 1960's/70's 'stick 6 foot plus talls in the forward line and bomb long to them' crap we are playing and us as spectators/members are forced to watch. It might have won us flags then but it'll only win us wooden spoons now.
4. You don't grind games against sides you are BETTER or equal than. The closeness of the scores gives them a sniff of victory. I found it ironic that it took until the 10min mark of the last quarter when we were 19pts down and the game almost over for us to start playing an open running and fluent style of footy. That's what really p***ed me off. The side can do it but it seems to be only as a last resort now
