I believe our top players have held too much sway with the coaches in recent years. There is an "untouchable" psyche with our big name players.
I have been amazed at the unconditional support our experienced players seem to enjoy from our last three coaches. A tight group of players hold the power at our club, a continuing culture where reputations become bigger than Ben Hur because of our supporter base.
So, we witness petulance, repetition of fundamental skills errors and casual concentration levels on a regular basis.
This is soul destroying in a team sport. A sport that demands rare courage.
In sport psychology, many believe an underlying fear of failure is one of the most powerful motivators.
Here is our problem. We must address this issue by creating this fear of failure in our club.
We need a coaching panel who are not intimidated by having their destinies in the hands of the players.
We need a Matthews or Malthouse type, a coach who sees himself above all players. This is the only way we can address this issue.

Don't agree with the Malthouse option.......but get Matthews on board. Hard Nut. Get the softness out. Peel the paint off the walls at halftime. Fear of God stuff.

Agree however not Mathews.....need someone new...Buckley????? although sown up by Col & Maguire........maybe.....certainly a hard at it player out of the game for only a year or two at most.....look at Voss.....Harvey.......intense physical attributes that will only lead to individual leadership........intern producing captains...leaders ..and players capable of team and constant performances..

How about just learn to recruit great FOOTBALLERS; stop going for quick-fixes & stop treating the draft like rubbish by throwing away picks for other teams average rejects. We'd actually see some success now at Richmond. Another coach won't make much of a difference now with our list. Richmond supporters overrate the list like no other. We're not AS bad as we were last night but it does show the reality of where we're truly at. You can do all the skills practise, kicking, etc... at training, but in the heat of the battle during a match, you can't really teach awareness, vision, poise and natural skill that you either have or you don't. We continue to recruit players with major deficiencies, then wonder why they fail or are just average. This is heart-breaking what Wallace & our recruiting have continued to do, even after the mess that Frawley left behind.

GO TIGES!!!

Yeah, fair point Mikee, but i don't think too many of our draft guns showed much courage last night either.
There is a cultural issue there, which i am probably not informed enough to pinpoint, but i would love to see what Matthews could do with our guys.
I think a few would be in tears after the first week.

Wayne Campbell was part of that type of culture (players holding too much sway) in a big way when he was at the club.

Nick Daffey once told a journalist that Wayne ran the place not realising how bad it sounded.

Gieshen was undermined constantly during his term hence that final scene with Campbell and Knights after his final game against Carlton.

Someone like Mathews is what our club needs. Sheedy really lost me with his recruiting in the last years.

Other than that Im all out of ideas. Promising untried assistant coaches now just look like lambs to the slaughter.

Thursday night suggested to me that we desparately need someone to take the side back to basics. We don't need someone who is learning how to coach like Buckley.

We need a coach who has proven that he will create an honest, hard tackling football side. Matthews, Laidley, Worsforld or Malthouse have demonstrated that capability.

Give Matthews or Malthouse a three year deal (non-extendable) to do whatever it takes to harden our pussies up and they might even take it.

Aha.....a kindred spirit!

There's been some suggestion that Laidley might be looking to move to a more lucrative job sometime soon. Maybe we should throw the kitchen sink at him.

I think North are paying him peanuts anyway. No need to offer him top $$

What we need is Tony Jewel to come in with a tray of meat pies and start throwing them at the players when they under perform.
