PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I believe our top players have held too much sway with the coaches in recent years. There is an "untouchable" psyche with our big name players.
I have been amazed at the unconditional support our experienced players seem to enjoy from our last three coaches. A tight group of players hold the power at our club, a continuing culture where reputations become bigger than Ben Hur because of our supporter base.
So, we witness petulance, repetition of fundamental skills errors and casual concentration levels on a regular basis.
This is soul destroying in a team sport. A sport that demands rare courage.
In sport psychology, many believe an underlying fear of failure is one of the most powerful motivators.
Here is our problem. We must address this issue by creating this fear of failure in our club.
We need a coaching panel who are not intimidated by having their destinies in the hands of the players.
We need a Matthews or Malthouse type, a coach who sees himself above all players. This is the only way we can address this issue.
