PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

(Haven't seen this topic already on PRE, which surprises me - apologies if I've simply missed it)

I hate Carlton as much as the next Tiger, but I was furious on their behalf on Friday night. I only saw the last quarter against the Hawks, but with 10 mins to go, the Hawks were 80ish points up, Buddy had his 100 and was 4 goals up on Fev (ie he also had the Coleman safely), and Fev was on 98, then 99. So what was at stake for Hawthorn?

I've heard that Ratten was furious about the flooding - ie he blamed Clarkson. Personally, I would have loved to see a Hawthorn player steer the situation. Croad simply backing off may have been a bit too much of a "charity" action - but maybe not, if done well - but why couldn't a Hawk have, say, passed the ball to Judd to hit Fev on the chest to get his 100?

This type of thing would need to be done openly. If you are going to go against your team's interest (even when they're 80 points in the clear!), you should do it in full view, showing your willingness to declare your action and take any team sanction afterwards. (Also, a clandestine give like this, if spotted, could damage your credibility as a team player generally.)

Ideally, Mitchell would have had a word to the half-back line; or a player simply have done it off his own initiative. The crowd generally would have loved it; Carlton fans would have had something to celebrate; it would have been a demonstration of admiration, generosity and solidarity among players, even of different teams. It would have been, in short, "good for football".

Even more fun would have been for Buddy to move down to the half-back flank, get the ball, then when everyone ran forward to turn around with a "Here you go!" and ping it to Fev. This would have been great even from a Hawthorn PoV: the positive PR for Buddy would have been huge; and he (and Hawthorn) would have a psychological edge over Fev forever - that he had gifted him the vital goal. And who would criticise Buddy on his special day?

What a way to celebrate the last round of the year! Two centuries, and some great sportsmanship.

Anyway, that's what I would have liked to see, and yes, even (actually, especially) if Richmond were in the place of Hawthorn. Not if we were losing; not if percentage could change or gain a finals place; not at the expense of one of our own players' milestones, but in Hawthorn's place, definitely.

Thoughts?
