Fevola: A golden opportunity missed

Al Bundy said:
He advised that Fev lacked application on the field when he didn't have the ball. He was never concerned when Fev had the ball but far too often he did not assist and went missing for many parts of the game.
Sounds like he would have fit right in at Richmond. :spin

With our ability to ruin young talent, Pavlich would be stuck at Coburg anyway.

I'm beginning to think that too Dragga - it's less about the players, more about the system and culture.........

My thoughts on Fev are easily defined by a slight adjustment of the thread heading:

FEVOLA - An opportunity missed - GOLD!

From memory Fev cuased many debate on PRE and the majority of people here thought is was a shocking idea.

Bit shocked to see some poeple claiming they wanted the deal.
We missed one here big time, I thought Fev got talked out of coming to Punt Rd by Pagan.
I think we were willing to give up pick 8 and Ray Hall. That deal had me more excited then any other mishap of my time following the Tigers. A lot of people on PRE thought Fev was very average and not worth the hassle.

The Willie Mason look-a-like has put together some very solid numbers and will only get better.

We had a poll and the results were 114 for 124 against. Fairly even considering the numbe rof votes.

I was one in favour of the deal.  No shock there.  ;)

Richmond’s headed for a Fevolution
And we know
The boy will kick some goals
Miller tells us that it’s fabrication
But we know
He’s got Cartlton by the (foot) balls
When they talk about trade transactions
We know Greg has got a heart of steel
So our future’s gonna be alright
Alright Alright

We’re headed for a Fevolution
Cos we know
Miller always gets his man
He’ll ask Carlton for a contribution
And they know
They’ll pay the wages of our man
But when they pay money for players gone out the gate
Carlton’s future’s not looking very great
But Richmond’s gonna be alright
Alright Alright

The Blues will have trading constipation
Cos they know
They need our first round pick
They belong in an institution
Cos we know
They’ll only get players we want to give the flick
A forward line of Rich, Fev and Nathan Brown
Will make Tigers smile and Blueboys frown
And we know it's gonna be alright
Alright Alright
A premiership’s in sight

I don't mind putting my hand up as one who had major concerns about Fev.

1. Carlton were looking at us giving up premium draft choices to get him.
2. Fevola was looking at being paid at the very highest levels.
3. He'd had regular & persistant groin injuries that had affected his previous seasons.
4. His off-field behaviour had been of concern.

I must also admit that the Fev scenario did affect my judgement on Kingsley.

1. Kingsley was an established & regular FF in an AFL team.
2. His behaviour at Geelong didn't have any blemishes.
3. He too had injuries the previous season, but since Fev had recovered, so might Kingsley.
4. Kingsley came for a song.

If I'd stayed with my tried & tested thoughts I'd have rejected Kingsley, as I did Fev.
Kingsley was a mistake, as has been proved.

If Kingsley had been fit at season's beginning, no doubt Schulz would have been left out of the team, or played down back.

Towards the future, we have Schulz, Hughes & Reiwoldt as very good junior forwards who need to be given proper opportunity.

With that, Pattison needs to be given senior time to develop his decision-making, skills & agility.

And hopefully, next season, we'll be fitting an AFL-ready, 199cm Matt Kreuzer into the team.

I'm surprised you think this way.

A team should always be looking to do two things, retain their good players and find more of them.

As you point out, Kingsley cost nothing, just the last spot on the list. If his presence gets in Schulz's way, then Schulz isn't trying hard enough and needs to pull his finger out. Same for Reivoldt, Hughes and Pattison. It won't hurt them to play as the three tall forwards at Coburg for the rest of this season, with the occasional run at Richmond. If one of these juniors decides there is too much competition up forward so he will work his backside off to win the vacant Full back spot, it is another win. I would have no problem if Kingsley's presence encourages Jack to grab the full back spot. Hughes looks a bit half-hearted about this opportunity. What does it say about him?

Kruezer would be a fantastic fit for our team. Another tall forward/ruckman is exactly what we need. If Kingsley's presence forces one of these guys to play 5 or 6 outstanding games in a row at Coburg to displace him, that is a win for the club.

If Kingsley goes back to Coburg and goes bananas, that is even better. The more competition for places, the better it is. Opportunities will come with injuries etc.

As we have seen with Simmonds, Hall and Kingsleygoing down, replacements were thin on the ground. Get as many reasonable players as we can together and make them fight for their spots. Thats how you find out which of your juniors are going to make it.

Yes hindsight is a wonderful thing, but what could have been had we managed to sign up Brendan Fevola in 2006?

We supposedly could not fit him into our salary cap so that is why we passed him up.
Otherwise it was a done deal.

Coleman medallist in a wooden spoon side last year, match winner, All Australian and one of if not the best kick for goal in the league.

I bring the topic up not just because he won the game for the scum against us and the bummers, but this.

A client of mine (Alan) flys the scums flag in his front yard in Hampton when they win.
He arrived home late Sat night after having been to the game and to another function and was planning to raise the flag the next morning.
That Sunday morning at 9:00 am his doorbell rang and it was Fev himself asking why the flag had not been raised?
Alan was stunned and invited him in for a coffee and explained why he had'nt put the flag up yet.
(The whole story featured in Sunday's Age)

Fevola came across as not only a top bloke but a true clubman who would give his left one for his club.
It certainly shows on the field.
Apart from Richo/Cogs who do we have that shows that sort of passion and committment for Richmond?

While I don't know how much room we needed in the salary cap to fit him in this was a massive one that got away.
We all know there are a number of players in our team who are overpaid, why o why Terry and Greg did you not move heaven and earth to get him to Punt road?

Looking at just this years games, had Fevola played for us I have no doubt we would be 2-1 if not 3-0, not 0-3. And we probably would have played Finals last year.

And just who is in our side is going to kick it to him?? Fev would get as frustrated as Richo does by all the petty handballing that we do when we get in anywhere from the back pocket to the wing! And we would prob still kick it to Richo, even when he has 3 blokes on him!

:sleeping :sleeping Have we still not moved on from this? ::) It can't be changed - look forward, not back

I too wanted Fev but his contract that he had just signed was MASSIVE and we did not need that pressure also from memory they wanted picks 8, 24 for FEV!!
