There's a fair bit of talk about how March and Wallace rate the year and whether there is friction, but for me, I'm pretty happy with this year.
11 and 1/2 wins (first over 50% return since 2001) What's more, we should have beaten the bulldogs and saints (we should have thirteen wins and be 5th!)
In 2006 we also finished 9th on 11 wins but I think this is a far more promising year because:
Deledio is now a confirmed star, Cotchin is my new man-crush, Foley still solid despite injuries and heavy tags. Morton kicked 35 goals from around 15 games. Tambling showed he will be ok. Moore, McGuane, Thursfield are now a solid backline with Rance to come in. Coghlan and Meyer may be ready to come back in 2009. The senior players, although good, were not the main reason for the improvement (Richo's brilliant first half of the year was when we lost most of our matches).
We are far more competitive. In 2006 we lost four games by 90+ points. This year we had competitive efforts against Geelong (for three quarters the first time), Hawthorn (twice), Bulldogs and Saints.
There were times this year when we played great footy. Freo and WC at Subiaco, the second quarter against Melbourne earlier this year, the last quarter against Brisbane.
If we can get a better physical presence in the forward line next year and someone to lighten the load in the ruck, there's plenty to look forward to in 2009.
I'm giving this year a 6.
