If we end up with the 4th or 5th national draft pick, and a club like Port Adelaide came to us and offered Nick Stevens, would any of you take the swap?

Because I reckon this will happen this year with some clubs being willing to trade into some early picks.

Thoughts?

Personally, for the club to give up first rd draft pick, it would have to be a very good midfielder like Stevens at a minimum.

Lot of variables RR.

If we were able to trade a established player or an up and coming one (eg Bowden or Hall) for one of the Bulldogs first 2 picks - I'd do that first and then happily trade pick 5 or 6 away for a quality established player like Stevens or Power.

Without the above scenario - yes I would seriously considered trading pick 5 or 6 for a Stevens or Power.

I certainly wouldn't give it up for a Dal Santo, Brown or Murphy

I think by eveidence in the past, we need to keep our first round pick because we are going to get a good "talent" with it. We should no longer look for quick fixes, its time to take some kids and develop a team. In fact we should trade Bowden, Richardson, Holland and Fiora and get some more earlyish picks!! Bite the bullet, the time for change is now.

We will have lets say pick 6?
Trade Richo?
Trade Bowden?
Trade Fiora?
Trade Holland?

There you have some early picks and get some very good players who we can develop from the start.

As good a player Nick Stevens is, I dont want to see us give our first pick for him.

I'd be happy to give up a first round pick for a young Nick Stevens type than risk getting a Pettifer again.
I don't see much difference in a proven 21-22 yo than an unknown 18yo.

If Port only wanted our first round pick for Nick Stevens i would say yes before they changed their minds.

He is a gun and we would have an extremely strong midfield with him added to the bunch including Johnson, Cogs, Campbell, Tivendale, Newman and Rodan

It would be a good mix of players who actually are in and under hard nuts and a couple of recievers which everyone needs

I would think that Port would want more than a 1st roud draft pick (say 6) for Nick Stevens - I think we should consider throwing in a Fiora or Pettifer (or both as you wont get much for KP) for Stevens, plus their 1st round draft pick (no. 14-18 or whatever it is)

Nick Stevens is a young gun midfielder and there is no reason not to take him. Barring any tragedies he has at least 7 good years of footy left in him and that is plenty.

With the draft we could end up with a champion for 15 years or we could end up wiht a Pettifer. I'd hedge my bets and go for a good proven young player. If we had some recruiting genius at the club I may change my opinion. But seeing we don't I'd play it safe.

Yeah JF, if we had anyone but Beck as our scout, I'd go for the early draft option but as it stands, you'd have to go for a Stevens - as you said, just to play it safe.

Quite sad is the reality down at Punt Road......

Spirit, Nick Stevens was just an example. My point was that some of these clubs like Port that will never have an early pick as they keep finishing top 5 will have to trade into those good picks as will Brisbane.

I don't think it is beyond the realms to think that a player like Nick Stevens who is from Melbourne would come back at the end of his current contract.

Coming to Punt Rd is another thing altogeather..

Nick Stevens will be 24 in January. As much as I dread Beck's judgement, with Miller now in charge in terms of recruiting we really should be hanging onto first round picks and in fact trading for more of them. It's going to take 2-3 years to turn our list around from the mess we are in now.

Strong rumour Nick Stevens will be joining Collingwood next year. Who knows if it is true but has had some press here in Adelaide.

Every year there's a rumour about player X going to Collingwood (Gehrig, Darcy, Judd, etc).

Richmond wont give up their first round pick for any player this year...... mark my words. Instead we will be looking at offloading players for even more picks.

I just hope Richmond use their 1st round draft pick wising for once. Let's hope they've done their homework for once.

I cant see Port off loading Nick Stevens.

Geez MT you forgot to add the Spider to your list.

I was told by a Collingwood supporter that JUDD was all but signed up at Collingwood. Yeah dream on.

But I think we would have to seriously consider our first round pick for a STEVENS or POWER. As JF said they still have plenty of football left in them and both would be long term prospects not short term fixes and are proven players of the quality we desperately need.

If we had pick 2 or 3 it maybe different, but with the draft allegedly being thin if our pick was in the 6-10 bracket then it would be worthy of consideration depending on a whole heap of factors.

saints prob wont have a pick till about 10, but there has been some interesting analysis on who the top 5/10 players int he draft will be.

we'll be hoping and praying that xavier clarkes older brother is available, but we doubt it.

Other than that it seems that up to about pick 7 there are some good on ballers/running players, and only one or two 188 to 193cm key postition players around.

with you guys having gaspar, holland, Ottons, hall, richo etc you'd prob be looking at one more on baller to cover coughlan campbell etc and a decent HBF and pot luck around pick 20ish

trading your kids and picks won't help you in the long term.

look at collingwood under malty, they had 5 top 10 picks during the end of francis/start of malty, similarly with freo, and the saints, wait 2 years and you have a ready built team.

and some players (maybe pettifer etc) will be late bloomers like at st kilda, or maybe will play better as a team is built around them.

I'm so glad we don't trade our early picks like we did for two years under timmy, and under sheldon. (note we have only 2 players selected by timmy watson at the club, the others are either pre timmy and post timmy)

i still shudder when i think we brought mark gale, justin plapp, monkhorst tony francis, tony delany to st kilda under timmy, i hear richmond supporters still laughing at us getting plapp
