Fit or unfit?

Wallace does have a fitness coach and it is Matt Hornsby if I am correct. Wallace stated very early in the peace that they wanted to be a bit different this year in their approach to ensure they ran out the season better. We definitely ran the game out as well if not better than the bulldogs I thought.

The Bulldogs were always one of the fitttest sides in the comp under Wallace. I just think that Terry has noted a weakness from last year and that was the kids really started to tire towards seasons end so they have tried to modify the program to suit.

This has also been complicated by the number of injuries which has meant that Wallace may not have been able to implement the rotations he would have liked under normal circumstances.

Matt Hornsby has been approached by a few premier league clubs in the UK for similar role, so his expertise is pretty well know even on a global level. In terms of fitness it is all very player specific with roles in mind, obviously there is a base level and then the specifics kick in. If players have to move to a different role than planned then perhaps the fitness program is not immediately suited. All comes down to planning and the individuals application, I think Fevola is the prime example of what can happen if the player gets his mindset in the right focus.

Lazy and unfit!
Not necessarily unfit but definately lazy and lack mental fortitude.

Our pathetic 1%s and tackle counts are the best indication of this.
We are the worst in the league in this area and it needs to be addressed urgently or we'll never improve.

The players clearly aren't working hard enough when we don't have the football.

You can do all the fitness work in the world but if this mentality isn't corrected we can forget about playing finals. Finals footy success is built on the back of these two areas!!!!!

Wallace has to take responsibility and correct this, it's a big black mark against his name at the moment.

Compare a gym junkie to a novice gym user, the gym junkie continues to lift the weight until the muscle fails. THe novice quits when it hurts. If you prepare yourself correctly come match time, they should be able to run thru the pain. Mite not be as hard or as fast but the effort would still be there and at the end of the day thats all we wanna see!
IMO mentally being tough will go along way to getting their mindset right come match time! Yer u mite get a player run away and cry because it hurts to much but premierships dont come easy!
As far as i know our strength and conditioning coaches are:
Warren Kofoed and Matthew Hornsby, here is some info i found on both. Both very well qualified, Warren more so but more importantly both have good experience.

Matthew Hornsby – Strength & Conditioning Coach, Richmond Football Club
Matt has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Physical Education from RMIT University and for the past six years has worked as a Conditioning Coach and Senior Runner at AFL level. He is the head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Richmond Football Club and Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Victorian Bushrangers cricket team. Matt previously worked with the Collingwood, Geelong and Port Power football clubs.

Matt has lectured in strength training for physical education and human movement students at RMIT University and has contributed numerous articles to the international magazine Ultrafit, where he held a position as assistant editor. He's also worked as a facilitator and presenter to a number of corporate and school groups on issues relating to elite athlete preparation and general health and fitness.

Matt made a decision during his uni days to work with elite athletes when it finally dawned on him that his own athletic ability would never get him to such a level.

Warren Kofoed – Strength and Conditioning Coach, Victorian Bushrangers
Warren graduated from the University of Ballarat with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement (graduate with honors) before being awarded a 12-month academic scholarship with the Victorian Institute of Sport in the fields of sport science and conditioning.

At the institute he had the opportunity to work with leading coaches and athletes in all Olympic sports and be exposed to the latest training, testing and research techniques.

Warren was then appointed by the Australian Institute of Sport/Australian Football League Academy as fitness adviser to the U/17 All Australian AFL team for two years. This position involved educating coaches and players at U/18 level around the nation on AFL conditioning, and allowed Warren to travel to Ireland to speak with coaches from the Gaelic Athletic Association.

In 2000 Warren accepted a position with MBF Health Management as an exercise physiologist working with corporate clients on a part time basis while maintaining his involvement with the VIS. He now works with the Richmond Football Club as Strength and Conditioning Coach and is head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Victorian Bushrangers cricket team.
