Five years of dead ends

You are missing the point - the only thing wrong with the list is the lack of big tall strong backmen (so we recruited Jordan McMahon !!!!). The kids we recruited can all play and of our "seniors" Richo is a champion who would kick 200 if he were playing at Geelong, Simmonds narrowly missed All Australian, Bowden is multiple All Australian (who has been forced to play on much bigger players and still done well), Pettifer is rated one of the best Fwd Flankers in the AFL by Champion Data, Brown was a champion before the leg break, Coughlan ditto before the knees.

Our problem is we have NO GAME PLAN ... if we do:

1 - we have the stupidest players in the AFL because they can't follow it or
2 - ii is the worst and most predictable game plan in the AFL (according to Grant Thomas and I agree)

Our other problem is that we have no answer to any other side's GAME PLAN - look at how North and Collingwood rebounded after a point or a free in the backline. Yet they were zoned or matched up when we got one! Look at the centre set ups - in the North game at one stage they had Harris, Simpson and Harvey against our taggers Tuck/Jackson and Tambling. Seriously ... who will win that clearance 999 times out of a 1000? Simmonds actually had 6 clearances in that game - must have given up on anyone else doing it.

Our game day set ups, match ups and coaching are appalling. We are the worst drilled side in the AFL ... North are a classic example of how you can be competitive ALL the time and their list is worse than ours. Hawthorn are another ... you can say Franklin is a star but there are plenty of workmanlike players in that line up who are rising to the occaision because their teammates KNOW what they are going to do.

Pay Grant Thomas whatever it takes and get him to Tigerland. At the draft, take the risks with the kid (e.g. Franklin) who everybody says is a problem.

Young Tiger, I admire your optimism, but mine is all worn out!

While the last two weeks have been very disappointing, things can turn around pretty quickly. The saints were terrible back in 2000/2001 but a few years later were playing in a preliminary final and have been finals contenders ever since

But they haven’t won a flag! People of my vintage remember winning flags – and that is all our club should aim at!

However there are some positives. We do have some promising young players coming through

We far less promising players than clubs like Collingwood, Essendon and Hawthorn, who were supposed to have rebuilt with us. Even Carlton seems to have a deeper stock of quality youth!

Young Tiger said:

He is our flagship young player, but he needs to do so much more. Has fallen behind others from his draft.

Young Tiger said:

Love him, but he is a workhorse, not a silky smooth operator.

Thursfield

Barely OK in my opinion.

Young Tiger said:

Like the kid, but needs to do more.

Young Tiger said:

I can’t understand how he was drafted – let alone taken with a high pick!

Young Tiger said:

Too slow to be really damaging.

Young Tiger said:

My fav player, but another workhorse.

Young Tiger said:
Riewoldt, Cotchin etc

Long time before we will know if they will even play 50 games – let alone become good players that can carry us to the finals.

Regardless of who the coach is, the team will get better over the next three to five years, even though it does not seem that way at the present point in time.

Oh I don’t know my young friend – have heard it all before – and I simply don’t believe it….

I'd have thought someone of your vintage would have seen enough football to know that it takes young players time to develop.

How long do we have to wait?

I will gone soon, and it will be too late for me...

Have a look at who's doing the damage for teams like Geelong and then have a look and see when they were drafted.

Following on from disco's post, if you really enjoy pain find out which draft picks we traded during that period and compare them against the players we could have drafted.

Very depressing reading.

Don’t forget the ones we actually took! Fiora, Pettifer and particularly Tambling should hang like anvils around our recruiting staff’s necks!

Ever wonder why the likes of Richo, Foley, King, Will etc are workhorses ? They are always under the pressure caused by the ineptitude of their teammates. Imagine these blokes in a decent side, its crazy what they could achieve.

That is a very true statement with Richo and Foley. But King would not be anything more no matter where he played. he is a very serviceable plodder - but there is absolutley no shame in that!

I'd just prefer to see something that resembles a game plan. I find it hard to believe that Richmond have the only players in the league that can't follow a game plan. This comes back to the coaching staff. They are obviously confusing the players of the players don't believe in the game plan (if there is one). We are where we are because of the coaching staff. Every good team in the league have players who stick to the game plan. It's got nothing to do with age, because Hawthorn are a young side and are still well drilled enough to maintain a game plan.

Terry Wallet, lift your game. You are beginning to stink up the Club.
