Interesting listening to Adam Simpson on the radio the other day. He was talking about how the game and changed so much since he started playing and he reckons that the game is all about keeping possession. To that end, a lot of the tactics etc. nowadays revolve around not giving the ball back when you’ve got it and that disposal skills are possibly now the most important element of the modern footballer. If you struggle in this regard, you can become a liability.
Given the plethora of blokes we have at Richmond whose disposal is average to poor, and the amount we STILL recruit to the club with questionable disposal, and then baby them for years on end, I reckon we still have a long....long.....way to go as a club in genuinely (i.e. regular top 4) turning our on field results around.
Interesting DeadBored. Though its not something thats many haven't known for a few years. Its just that the issue & what qualities are important in players has changed drastically over the past few seasons.
Players are slimming down, its all about fitness & kicking skills.
Unfortunately on the latter, unlike Hawthorn we are still not non-negotiable on bringing guys in with A grade kicking skills. Leysy's among others like yourself & Evo who've argued we've had/got a flawed approach for in our recruiting for many years. Sure its improved, but players still get drafted/traded for with questionable disposal.
The game is more about keeping possession than ever before. Looking at teams as recently as 5 years ago to base your side on is already outdated.
The changes leysy's in AFL footballs style over the past 2 seasons have been the quickest & most drastic in his time watching the sport. For the worse as an impartial viewer as well ILO. Though for Richmond to be a threat we need to jump on board & start getting not just accurate kicks in, but long one's as well.
Guys like Guerra, Young, Hodge, Dew etc are all not just accurate but also very long kicks. Even the secondary runners like Bateman, Ladson, Osborne etc are all also very good kicks. Not to mention Geelong, who whilst not having the elite long kicks of the Hawks still have barely a weak link by foot in there lineup.
