Foley injury/doubt [Merged]

he's playing, trained strongly on fri as stated in the hun, i know we cant always take what they say for granted but if he was really in doubt they would not say trained strongly on fri, thats just my take on it....

Fev was cructhes for 3+ days and just trained on fri too but he seemed restricted from what i heard but he will play on thurs no doubt...

Fair enough AT, you can understand the skepticism though, we have entered the AFL's ducks and drakes season, the coaches will have been obsessing about the match ups for weeks so they might think they can get an advantage from throwing the other team with their injury reports.

Edit: The club used the phrase 'good as gold' to describe his fitness...

If he plays, might just give us the upper hand in the mid field with Stevens out. Mid field is where this games gonna be won.

Would like to see Richo drift forward as much as possible. Dont believe Carlton have anyone to go with him, maybe with the exception of Waite, but even then I dont think he's got the engine to go with Mad Cow.

Good post Redders.
Folks talk of the midfield battle of Judd, Gibbs, Murphy vs Deledio, Foley, Cousins but few actually include Richo into Tige's midfield. With his aility to additionally hurt wilst drifting forward he really is our 'X Factor' :spin these days and it'll be hard for the Blues to nullify him wherever he spends most of his time on Thursday.

Game will be won by the team with the most efficient disposal and defensive pressure. ]
Our midfield can be on top but with shitty disposal and shocking turnovers we get beaten (as was the case a few times last year).

Not tyring to be negative but our disposal (or lack of it) and decision making will be the major factor in us climbing the ladder this year.

There is no doubt we have the cattle....but whether the cattle have the clean skills and vision will be the deal breaker

Fair point.

Interesting listening to Adam Simpson on the radio the other day. He was talking about how the game and changed so much since he started playing and he reckons that the game is all about keeping possession. To that end, a lot of the tactics etc. nowadays revolve around not giving the ball back when you’ve got it and that disposal skills are possibly now the most important element of the modern footballer. If you struggle in this regard, you can become a liability.

Given the plethora of blokes we have at Richmond whose disposal is average to poor, and the amount we STILL recruit to the club with questionable disposal, and then baby them for years on end, I reckon we still have a long....long.....way to go as a club in genuinely (i.e. regular top 4) turning our on field results around.

I do know what you mean, but don't you think you exadurating just a tad?

Young Vicory looks a pretty good kick, does that mean we drop Tuck and play him in his play Vicory instead because it will be an upgrade in foot skills? Are the Hawks going to drop Mitchell or the Cats dropping Corey, neither of those guys are great kicks either.

Been saying this for the last 5 years. Most people crapped on about height or speed or hardness, these were always going to be secondary concerns eventually.

Too bad Miller never caught on.

Agree, though I think we are gradually getting a increase in skill. It could have been expediated a hell of a lot quicker though which is frustrating, sure. Was a great interview, heard it too. Interesting what he was saying about how he used to try and take 1 contested mark a game, whereas he has given up on that now as it's just not the way the game is played anymore. Midfielders rarely take strong contested marks nowdays.

He obviously hasn't seen Lids play lately.

:hihi Though in fairness Lids plays a lot forward. I think he's general point is pretty spot on. Watsoon was saying the Bummers used to have a strategy of kicking to a contest you knew your teammate could win. Now players try to do everything BUT kick to a contest.

Got some news on Axel just now............

Just spoke to a certain "fringe Richmond player" who said Foley will play, no questions asked. Not sure if my contact is in PR mode or not but that was what he said, so I can only take it as he tells me.

Team is set to be announced on Wednesday night. Some nervous players waiting around for Round 1 team now that the game is a full SELL OUT

Interesting DeadBored. Though its not something thats many haven't known for a few years. Its just that the issue & what qualities are important in players has changed drastically over the past few seasons.

Players are slimming down, its all about fitness & kicking skills.

Unfortunately on the latter, unlike Hawthorn we are still not non-negotiable on bringing guys in with A grade kicking skills. Leysy's among others like yourself & Evo who've argued we've had/got a flawed approach for in our recruiting for many years. Sure its improved, but players still get drafted/traded for with questionable disposal.

The game is more about keeping possession than ever before. Looking at teams as recently as 5 years ago to base your side on is already outdated.

The changes leysy's in AFL footballs style over the past 2 seasons have been the quickest & most drastic in his time watching the sport. For the worse as an impartial viewer as well ILO. Though for Richmond to be a threat we need to jump on board & start getting not just accurate kicks in, but long one's as well.

Guys like Guerra, Young, Hodge, Dew etc are all not just accurate but also very long kicks. Even the secondary runners like Bateman, Ladson, Osborne etc are all also very good kicks. Not to mention Geelong, who whilst not having the elite long kicks of the Hawks still have barely a weak link by foot in there lineup.
