PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Now that the season has ended, for Richmond, it may be an appropriate time to do the 2007 version of Tiger Football Manager.

The first step would be to, again, look at the list as a whole and see where we are at.

So, for me, the main points are:

1. Not only did we start the season with a dearth in the big man department, but with the retirement of 4 from 6 of our mature talls puts us in a perilous position.
We have left ourselves with 2 twilights in Richo & Simmonds, The two younger mature players - Hall & Knobel - have both retired. And the only two left - Pattison & Graham - are both less than 22yo.
Generally, clubs have 8 of this type spread over all age groups. We now have 4, of which two are at the top age end and 2 at the bottom age end, and nothing in between.
In this area we ARE in a worst case scenario.

2. In the mobile tall area, the retirement of Gaspar & the uselessness of Kingsley , left us with only 2 players over 21yo - P.Bowden & Polak, and Patrick spent most of the year either injured or recovering. This put pressure on all 5 of our mobile talls aged 18-21yo. Again, a worst case scenario.
Generally a club needs 7 of these, we have 7, our problem is more that most are under-age.

3. The taller mediums - we've always had too many.
In 2004 we had 16 of these, now we only have 12. Generally a club only needs 10 of these, spread over all age groups. The flankers come from this area, and this year it is not of any real concern.

4. The smaller mediums - this is where your inside midfielders come out of.
Again, a club would want about 10 of these types spread evenly over the age groups, we've got 11.
Our problem is not that we don't have enough, or not that we have too many, it's just that more than half of them sit in the 18-21yo age group.
The area doesn't demand attention. It would be nice to pick up a classy one, but it's not an imperative.

5. The smalls - rovers, tear-away forwards & defenders.
Need 6 spread evenly. We got 6, but 4 of the 6 are 18-21yo.
Again, no real imperatives in this area.

So, at least in my mind, the summary is:
1. Really Talls - have 4 of 8, need another 4, but 2 of the 4 need to be 21/22yo.
2. Mobile talls - have 7 of 7, need younens to mature.
3. Medium talls - have 12 of 10 needed, need 2 less. Who wants to jump?
4. Smaller mediums - have 11 of 10 needed, need 1 less. Again, any volunteers?
5. Smalls - have 6 of 6, need no extras.

As you can estimate for yourselves, the total of players needed is 41. The senior list should be 38 plus outside veterans, and there should be 4 AFL-subsidised rookies. So there is room to carry a couple of extras in a group, and reduce them slowly by attrition.

So, in a nutshell, we are in dire straights regarding our talls, and there is an opportunity to trade up the quality of those groups that we have sufficient numbers of.

The next stage is to look at each of the groups individually.
