Just did a (very) quick count of players on AFL lists that are sons or close relatives of a former VFL/AFL player. I think I got to about 40-odd players. They include names like Hird, Fletcher, Scarlett, Cornes, Ablett, Ball etc. I haven't bothered to do the same with TAC sides, but I'm lead to believe that there are quite a few there too.
We have at least half a dozen on our list.
While there are obvious success stories, I reckon that footy looks after its own pretty well, often to the detriment of rep sides, TAC sides, filtering thru to AFL lists.
If 2 players are roughly equal in ability, is it a good move to choose a player with a dad or brother or cousin who has made it to AFL level? Dunno about the stats, but I reckon there are a lot of blokes on AFL lists who are of dubious talent, but have the right surname.
