PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Sheedy is at it again, implying in today's papers that Roos and Wallace would like to turn the game into Basketball.

The same debate about one on one play vs flooding/zone defence rages in both sports. In the NBA, for example, they have banned the zone defence and many junior clubs won't allow their younger teams to employ it because they believe that it interferes with learning the basics of the game.

IMO, flooding back into defence is the biggest blight on the game because it encourages players to play keepings-off instead of football, as we know and love it.

Basketball has seen it banned or, at the very least, frowned upon. Nonethless, it is the most effective form of defence and turns games into dour struggles, something else that is near and dear to a footy fan's heart.

Soccer teams generally play with one or two strikers and a loaded defence and midfield. It is not unusual to see the goalie on his own when the ball is at the other end and the strikers often act as a pathway out of defence, controlling the ball, slowing the game and passing off sideways to a midfield runner. The off-side rule entrenches flooding back because players can't run too far ahead of the ball. Possession takes precedence over attack.

Footy is starting to look like a combination of these two sports.

What can the AFL do to nip this in the bud?
