Footy Classified on Ch 9 @ 10.30pm

Two matters on this:

1) is it true your club can be fined for inappropriately calling for a head count

2) why don't we just use the bib system like in soccer? you wear the bib when you are on the bench, and before you can run out on the ground you have to hand it over

In answer to Q1 yep you can be fined for calling for a head count and its incorrect. Stops time wasting.
Part 2 they have interchange numbers in Rugby League

Was it reported by the Interchange Stewards ? Or else who picked it up?

The captain runs to the nearest umpire and says head count? The umpire replies it wouldn't hurt. Then says something like everybody freeze. And so on.

Takes about three seconds unless the original confusion gets out of hand.

And if the captain is doing something silly such as concentrating on the ball or is not made aware of this? The fact that Sydney had extra players didn't it appears become apparent till well after the game, so I don't think there would relistically be any opportunity to complain at the time. In my opinion it shouldn't be up to the opposition team to police this but the job of the officials. If that means one or two officials watching the changes as they occur and having the ability to stop the game at an instant then so be it. Any club with more players on the ground then there should be, should be penalised.

Head counts and the threat of having a score wiped is more of a deterent than a fine is. Imagine it happening in a grand final. The coach 'accidently' has an extra player on the ground. A whopping $15,000 fine, or your score axed? Which would scare the team most?
