they say the price for the next radio rights is gonna skyrocket. is it gonna place anyone out of the market?

will it mean more money and exposure to the clubs?

are radio stations gonna be forced to cover the games of victorian teams when playing interstate?

will SEN be a player? will the owners of SEN give the AFL a partial ownership of the station in exchange for footy rights?

does anyone have any inside info?

A stake in SEN by the AFL would be great as that would insure the viability of the station.
I love SEN especially the run home and Gladiators of sport on wed and sun nights on world sport overnight with the Schibecster (another tiger fan) great value and have long left fm repetitive radio behind.

And I wonder if those rights would include some of the more high profile games week by week to ensure longterm viability of the station. If so then Im not sure whether other radio stations would be prepared to to pay the exhorbedent prices that many believe are due this time around.

With the amount of exposure SEN give AFL I'd be staggered if they didn't form part of the AFL radio broadcast.

craig, you're reading my mind. i've given up on fm radio because of the repetitive music (plus no one plays my choice of music). i've been listening to SEN since day 1. but it's starting to get very stale and unprofessional. the run home isn't as good without dermie and matt hardy. they need an injection of money to bring in some bigger names.

i think if SEN don't win the radio footy rights they will be finished by the years end and then we really will have nothing to listen to...

i live in qld and miss radio in melb but i tune into sen via the net and its really good.
We don't realise how lucky we are with SEN in Melb.Glad you still get to listen to SEN in QLD Jonnomc.

The racing industry's ownership of 927 and TVN sets a precedent, but in the case of 927 the industry needed to ensure racing coverage as this was declining. 3UZ (927) and 3DB (1026) had both broadcast racing, but 3DB switched to FM (and is now MIX) and 3UZ was dying. The industry needed people to be able to hear their races (this was before Sky Channel) if betting in TABs was to continue to provide revenue to the industry. So they bought the licence when the station was on its deathbed.

The AFL has no such problem with media coverage, particularly with games staggered over three days and nights. I doubt the AFL would want to sink money into a basketcase like SEN when it can simply charge for broadcast rights and have a guaranteed win.

I think that there is an opening for a radio network to cover games not currently taken by any broadcasters eg in Tasmania or Canberra.

SEN could probably be utilised there and it would be good for the station to have some sort of financial security and stay viable for us loyal listeners.

I would expect the "mainstream" radio rights to have a significant increase however as I believe the current arrangements provide a huge advertising windfall to the commercial broadcasters.

True the run home is lacking certainly since Matty Hardy left Ian, he was good value for mine, but for me Gladiators of sport is great for talkback, comedy and feel good entertainment. Schibecki is very good and has a very very loyal band of listeners including our own Billy from Heidelberg. Bruce Eva good too.
I dont even follow soccer but also enjoy listening to the 4 Diego's as they are also good value and have actually got me a little interested in soccer with the world cup coming up.
SEN has been a life saver for me and also very good for soccer fans as well as basketball and American sports fans as they all have their own air time for special shows.
I will be stuffed if SEN goes, then i have to go back to listening to that clown Dwayne Russell on AW. :-\

What happened to Matt Hardy? Last I heard he was going in for an appendix operation, then he didn't return. Money? Fired? Left of his own free will?

Hardy gone too drible MMM

I too listen to SEN at morning and night sometimes, unfortunately not at work. Just would not like ito be just an AFl channel as already some of their hots their knowledge beyond AFL when doing intereviews is embrassing.

I suspect two of the above, but in the Sun today they said he would be on Nova over the Commonwealth Games.

I agree that the run home is a bit flat without him (he added the fans perspective very well).

I used to listen in the morning (Brownless, Watson, etc) but they're now too boring. I agree the Run home is great, what happened to the other presentor (had a groin op)?

don't get me started on dwayne russell. i stopped listening to sports today after he got the gig. i can't stand him. sad news about matt hardy, i didn't know he defected...

but anyway, back to the subject at hand. does anyone know the process with radio rights? i mean it's not as if triple m, 3aw and SEN have to outbid each other, because unlike TV the AFL could give them all the rights. do they make an offer to the AFL and get the AFL to agree with it? how would this affect richmond?

completely agree roycey.

i'm very eager for news on the radio rights because it appears the future of SEN is dependent on this... (i just spent a fair bit of money on a pocket sized am radio with good reception)
