Forward line this year....how are we shaping up?

to see where we are really at and how well the forwards go against a bit of quality look at the last game a true indication of where we are at.
Do you think this was the fault of the forwards, or the midfield??

clearly this game was a result of our mids and ruck getting smashed and overun, cousins, kerr, judd & cox all had field days

not to mention our backline unable to cope with a speedy small who was getting the ball pumped down hios throut

The four games we got smashed, the first place we got smashed was the midfield.
After that everything else is a picnic all over the ground.
When our midfield holds it's own we are competitive with any side.

Precisely my point. We could have 2 Tony Locketts in our fwd line & it wouldn't matter if we couldn't it to them. Same with the defence. You could have the best defenders out back, but if it is raining footies into the defensive 50, they won't stand a chance. Our mids need to get their *smile* together.

With the advent of these new "hands in the back" rule the forwards will initially have an advantage over their defenders so the conversion rate from forays into the forward 50 should be higher. This is going to get messy for us if our midfield is getting smashed. Makes the midfield more important not less.

I wonder how the umps will rate Richos favourite big two handed side push to give himself some space against a holding opponent? Probably go the other way.

lots of sides have their midfield soundly beaten but dont get beaten by 100 points. the simple facts are when compared to the better sides we are poor all over the ground. in fact ive seen many games where teams have dominated possesion but lost. with very good backlines you are capable of minimising damage when yopur midfield is under the pump. and by the same token if you have a very good forward line when the teams under the pump they capitalise on minimal oprtunities thus keeping their team in the game. all this focus on midfield is nonsense its well rounded well structured footy teams that win premierships.

What about Lids? I reckon he will spend more time up forward than we think.

Forgot about Lids, Harro. TW has statesd that Lids will be resting in the forward line this season. Lids looked infallible when marking in the few games I saw him play as a junior. Hasn't had the same athletic edge at AFL level and has struggled to mark consistently to date.

I'm pretty confident that he will become a fine mark at the level.

If he were fit enough, he could provide excellent pressure on the backs. But to date he pretty much plays one-way footy (usually as instructed, I guess, but not always). This season should see him improve dramatically in this area, particularly in view of his pre-season.

A big factor.

Also Polo is another who I think is a genuine Utility and can play taller and shorter if needs be. He is very composed for his slender years.

Reckon Polo will play in the middle based on what TW has said. Can push forward and kick a goal as we saw in his debut game. Maybe rotate forward. I hope so.

I think last season was all about education for Lids. Somethings he took to like a duck to water and other things he seemed to take a backward step but in reality I don't think he did. He will be so much better for the experience. Seems to have bulked up and if CC's early report about him starting to train after mad monday is any indication then I reckon Plough has told him to unleash the beast this year.

After all, Lids did admit to struggling with the hard tag last season. Some more meat on those bones, a better defensive effort and stronger aerobic fitness and this guys skills will boost him into a new stratosphere........ I hope!

Forward line of:
Brown Shulz Kingsley
Bowden P Richo Pettifer

Looks pretty potent would like to see Richo play up the ground use his marking & skills would be a good target coming out of the backline. Pettifer works pretty hard & can go in the midfield also kicks well Kingley & Shulz leading forwards & if it goes over their heads the mercurial Brown to clean up!! Would be nice if Tambling, Deledio, Krakouer, Polo, Meyer could kick a few goals also. Put Patrick accross half forward because would be hard to match up on & would probably play around the middle anyway.

If we can get 16 per game like Terry promised in 2005 we will be pretty competitive:

Richo 3 (his career average)
Browny 2
Petts 2 (with a little improvement)
Schulz/KK 2 (I hope)
Deledio 1
Krak 1 (I think he might go better than this in 2007)
Tambling 1
Simmo 1
Tuck/Hyde 1
Rest of team 2

= 16

Looks good on paper anyway.

No argument from me about needing a well balanced side to win flags Claw.
Simple fact is that when you have a comprehensively *smile* list you need to start building it from somewhere, as the contest starts in the midfield why wouldn't you start your rebuilding work there? Keeping in mind of course that you also need to reconstruct the bookends as you get the opportunity.

Lids and Tambing arethe X factors. If they explode the forward line will get more supply and hopefully they can produce one or two each a week.

Foley, Johnson, Tuck and Polo to provide the grunt but unless we get something from pick 1 and 4 of 2004 we will still be bunch of plodders.

no i wouldnt have started with the midfield i would have started with the kpp because they take longer to develop and make a decent contribution on games.
if iwas going for midfielders big solid quick more inside than out would have been my priority. not skinny outside hbf hff who might play midfield oneday.
