I bet that would have opposition defences shaking in their boots - look out, here comes Cleve wandering through and Schulz meandering around (although at a slightly increased tempo). That would really increase the defensive pressure you are looking for.
Personally, how many tackles Richo lays a game is not the most important stat. All this garbage about good "defensive" forwards forgets the main objective - get the pill and kick goals. Granted, your CHF line is crucial to preventing swift counter-attacks but if you get a midfiled that can kick coupled with a quality key forward with appropriate support staff the only time the ball comes quickly out of your forward line is in the hands of the midgets in white.

Its certainly a tough one.... He has been such a great player for this club - and on many weekends has been the reason ive kept turning up to the footy. However, there are issues there that have been the result of a one dimensional fwd line over the past decade. Think about it - if in your job you are to do the same thing for ten years with the same expectations - how do you suddenly change your ways? its very difficult.

IMO this club will not proceed fwd until the big man has called it a day - champion or not. Sure he was fantastic round 1 - and he will continue to play some super games this year, however, my consideration is whether or not this is doing the club any sort of favours long term?

Hawthorn cut its losses with Thomo and Rawlings and even Dixon to an extent - all very good players and headed down a youth path. Now Buddy, Roughead, Boyle, Thorp etc rule their fwd line. It has youth, pace, flair and flexibility.

I believe we have talented players in Schulz, Hughes, and JR who could potentially (dirty word) hold our fwd line. I would love to see how a fwd mix of:

Morton Hughes Edwards

JR Schulz White/Connors

* 3 talented Key Position players

* Morton as a lead up fwd flank - can play tall and small

* Edwards has the flair and pace

* White/Connors to add grunt - chase, tackle, harrass - Connors has more skill

- im not saying this will or should happen. I am just curious to know what it would be like right now if these guys had 40 games into them etc and were ruling the fwd line. It would be unpredictable - they would have some shocking days im sure, but gee it would be an exciting year to watch!!
By the time most of these players have the necessary 40 / 50 games or more under the belt the big Cho will be retired. You may just get to see what you wished for.
Schulz has nearly 50 games but the rest have only a handfull each.

Was that just a random thought or is it in some way intended to actually provide some logical reason why the theory in the post you quoted wouldn't work?

Also, do you think Richo's performance may be somewhat linked to the midfield's ability to get the ball into Richmond's forward line? Most top teams over the last 15 years have dominated Richmond's midfield to the extent Richo ends up leading up to the half back flanks as it's as far as the ball gets for long periods of the game.

As for the stats, Richo against the premiers and runners up:

2005 - Sydney, 4 goals
- West Coast, 5 goals

2006 - West Coast, 4 goals
- Sydney, 2 goals and 0 goals

2007 - Geelong, 2 goals and 4 goals
- Port, 2 goals and 4 goals

27 goals in 8 games. That performance over an entire season would give him about 80 goals.

Cannot believe the panning of Richo. The midfield got spanked against North, looked good against Carlton. No one one was complaining after Round 1. Fact is if the ball comes in quickly and cleanly then most forwards look good. If it is the opposite then only a few forwards can still pull it off. Given the midfields the big Rich has had before him it is a wonder he hasn't had more poor days.

At the very least, Richo takes a v.good opponent. Firrito, whom I rate quite highly and provides tremendous rebound, had 29 "dream team" points, such was his respect for the big fella.

Brian Royal's contract expires at season's end.Wonder if he will survive?

Yes that'll be interesting, I'm not a Royal lover, never have been, as a matter of fact I've never been a Wallace lover either.

Until we have some forward applying defensive pressure, we will continue to have teams score easily on the rebound against us.

Richo chases but is slow.
Brown and Pettifer dont chase at all.
Hughes tries to look like he is, but doesnt really.
Schulz has gone from a shuffle to a jog at least.
Deledio occasionly attempts to chase.

As soon as the ball hits the deck up front, its gone and they score.

Interesting then that Jackson & Pattison have been named up front & Hughes and Pettifer on the extended bench..
Perhaps terry is finally beginning to see exactly what you are saying.

this topic has been raised many mnay times on these pages and the same arguments get put forward each time.

Those for "Richo for FF" argue he's continually the highest in contested marks in the comp blah blah blah...

Those in the "Let Richo be Richo" camp retort by saying, yeah and he didnt acheive that by standing at FF all day blah blah blah...

It'll never end like this topic has proven.

I used to be in the Richo to FF but we've tried it before and guess what it didnt work!

All he does is pick his nose all day and watch from afar as the other side kick goals down the other end.

I remember being behind the goals one night and it was fraustrating the bejesus out of him.

Is that what your saying we do to our best forward?
