Fox Footy

Yes, I remember that too. The last agreement trumpeted that the northern states would get broadcasts, but it didn't happen.

I hope they get a better deal this time, but it's all still a bit too murky.

Under a contingency plan struck by Seven and Ten last summer, when it agreed to match the $780 million five-year offer put forward by Channel Nine's owner, Publishing Broadcasting Limited, Seven would televise Friday night football into the established football states with Seven and Ten going head-to-head on Saturday afternoons and Saturday nights. Channel Ten would televise two games on Sunday — the 1pm game and the twilight game — while Seven would televise the 2pm match.

i'd never heard this one before...

I have a feeling next year that people are going to bemoan the fact that ch 9 no longer has the footy. I know PRE was pretty much pro ch 7/10 and anti ch 9 but I could never really understand that except perhaps for the anti Eddie & Dermie factor.

no, the anti ch 9 views expressed by the majority here is because ch 9 have the NRL rights and would continue to treat footy as a 2nd class sport in the northern states.

one thing i've never been able to understand is... despite ch 7 and 10 paying the exactly amount of money for the rights next year, why does ch 10 wanna continue to show 2 games per week? (1 game less than ch 7) remember, from next year they won't get exclusivity for the finals... they are sharing them with ch 7

Just announced on Channel 10 news:

Deal between 7, 10 & Foxtel unlikely. All games likely to be on free to air nationally (according to Demetriou).

Seen to be miles apart on a deal. Should be live on Friday into Qld and NSW.

Don't now how 7 will fit in the footy & the car racing.

PBL are trying hard to not get the deal down with Fox so Footy to put massive financial constraints on the Seven and Ten Networks.

I have no idea where this headed but I have a feeling that the AFL is going to end up with a massive amount of egg on its face.

when there is a packer involved there is likely to be shifty dealing going on, 25% ercent stake in foxtel and the way the litigation is still happening between all these parties, i think the AFL outsmarted themselves allowing 7 to buy the last bidding rights for 20 mill...yeh easy money at the time but could it come back to bite them?

Will the AFL care? They got 780 mill and may end up with all games on free to air. Would have thought that was an outstanding result for the AFL.

not when you have competing sports (soccer) lurking, foxtel was a very good marketing tool for the game...the telecasts will be compromised if 7 and 10 have to show all games especially when shown interstate i suppose only time will tell but i can assure you the AFL aint happy with whats been happening ;)

Fair enough t-80. As pointed out on SEN, in a 5 year deal there is 925 games including finals but excluding NAB cup. That means ch 7 and 10 have paid over $840,000 per game. Seems a lot!

I reckon that the hold up in the radio deal is because the AFL are not sure if every game will be done live on free to air, so the AFL wants to ensure that every game will be broadcast on radio.

Maybe I am being a bit navie but I would have thought that the actual set up of the channels, game splits and the number of games on free to air would have been already sorted out.

It must be recognised that Foxtel hasn't gone within cooee of making a profit yet...ATM they are losing a lot each financial year.

Foxtel made a profit of $169 mill for 05/06 (their first full year profit)

Thanks Timmay, I hadn't heard about this, good to see.

Go SBS!

My problem with Foxtel getting ANY games is that it's elitist... Not everybody can get Foxtel connected, even if they want to.

Mind you, I guess SBS's reception isn;t always the greatest - but it's out there at least. ;)

In many parts of rural Australia, SBS is not available without buying a satellite dish and there is only one or two commercial channels - one of them almost always being a channel nine affiliate. So for these people, Austar (Foxtel's rural service) will be their only way of getting to see their side play regularly at a decent time of day.

People in the capital cities have the opportunity to see football live most weekends, people in the southern states get regular news about football...for those in remote areas or the northern states, Austar/Foxtel simply enables them to follow the football properly.

The commercial networks don't serve their interests, Austar/Foxtel bridges the gap and gives people across the whole country a chance to follow the game.

Les Murray (head of SBS sport) has taken the position that AFL is not an international sport and thus does not fit SBS sports mission.

It will be interesting to see whether he will change his tune now that the A-league and socceroo games have gone to Foxtel.

I wouldn't say Hurling was an international sport, but I have seen that on SBS.

Ch 9 may have ego problems with some of its footy team but that is minor problem to some of the cr@p ch 10 serve up.

When people hear Sandy Roberts calling again they'll think they are in 1992.

Good...then I will be 32 again!!!

what and 7 and 10 dont want  i reckon is to have to  show games against each other or even the afl for that matter, but under all their huffing and puffing i think there could be a few old scores to settle or perhaps some bruised ego's....

Cars will do laps around the outside of the MCG, and it will be captured on camera from the new Holden Airship, so you can watch both at the same time.

Bad luck for the dough-nut sellers though...they'll have to find a new venue.

8 games on FTA wont happen because of the extra outlay both ch7 & 10 would have to fork out.Extra commentators, cameramen, equipment. Not to mention both channels being forced to go against each other.
At the end of the day both ch7 & ch9 will have got what they wanted[payback].Ch7 ensuring foxfooty goes under in response to the demise of C7 and Ch9 ensuring as part owners they get AFL on foxtel at the cheapest deal possible.Payback for losing the FTA rights.

Spot on Skipper,9 had their package all sorted out whereas 7 & 10 haven't & are unlikely to.

ch's 7 and 10 will lose advertising revenue showing footy on free to air in nsw and qld, not to mention they will have to go head to head against each other. this will result in lowering the value of the rights next time around.

The AFL have taken no responsibility on this issue and have left it to the TV stations to sort out. If the solution is unpalatable they will deserve the public backlash. One thing that had better be guaranteed is that someone is going to do a live telecast when we're playing interstate, else I'll be perched on the grassy knoll with a sniper scope when Demetriou drives past on the way to work (maybe he has a chauffeur after his pay rise).
