I heard him on radio the other day saying that we have had quite strong recruiting since he has been there, implying what we already know that pre 2003 our recruiting didn't exist and that 2003-05 when it should have been strong it turned out a bit limp. He thought 2006 was his first draft of input.
I thought I'd see what others think of his point. If it's true then we have some small hope for the future:
Pre- FJ recruiting (The Miller zone):
2003: Alex Gilmour,Thomas Roach, Daniel Jackson,Shane Morrison, Brent Hartigan, Shane Tuck,Andrew Raines, Simon Fletcher, Kyle Archibald,Nathan Foley(R)
2004: Brett Deledio, Richard Tambling,Danny Meyer, Adam pattison, Dene Polo, Luke McGuane, Dean Limbach,Mark Graham, Will Thursfield(R)
2005:Jarrad O-N, Cleve Hughes, Travis Casserley, Matthew White, Angus Graham(R),Jeremy Humm(R),Cameron Howat(R).
FJ recruiting:
2006: Jack Reiwoldt,Shane Edwards,Daniel Connors,Carl Peterson, Andrew Collins,Tasman Clingan(R),Jake King(R)
2007:Trent Cotchin, Alex Rance, Dean Putt, David gourdis, Clayton Collard(R),Jarrod Silvester(R),Tristan Catledge(R), Cam Howat(R)
2008:Tyrone Vickery, Jayden Post,Tom Hislop, Ben Cousins, Robin Nahas(R),Andrew browne(R), Alroy Giligan(R).
I have left out trades for simplicity since they most often are done by others in the club leaving the recruiting manager with less picks (count how many third round picks FJ has had to use in his time).
In my view, in the 2003-2005 period there are 26 players, of which I see only ten as genuine players (doesn't matter exactly which ones, its about overall results).
In the Francis Jackson period (a bit of guess work on the newer kids I know) there are 22 players, of which I see 8 genuine players, excluding Ben Cousins.
Is it better? At that speed of recruiting good players, 8-10 every three years, can we ever build a team?
It makes me thing we need to recruit MORE players each year, and turn them over faster if they dont show a spark in their first COUPLE of years, rather than the four or so we give them now. (slight leeway for talls I guess)
It could be that if we pick up 8-10 more in the next three years we will have 30 good players on the list. That may be enough, I wonder.
