Richmond president Clinton Casey says coach Danny Frawley does not have to lead the Tigers into the finals in 2003 in order for the coach to keep his job.

Frawley enters the upcoming home and away season as a coach under pressure after his team slipped from 3rd to 14th last year in what was his third year in charge of the Tigers.

And already the signs are not looking good for the Tigers for the 2003 premiership season which Richmond kicks off against Collingwood in two weeks time after the news that the clubs star ruckman Brad Ottens will miss at least the first half of the season with a back injury.

However Casey said Frawley had the support of the Tigers board and was not under any ultimatum - such as making the finals in order to keep his job.

We have certainly been bought up to date with the game plan and the strategy and what the football department has in place for the year, he said on Friday.

From that point of view we will monitor that and we are satisfied with that.

Casey said the club had been conservative with its financial projections for the year saying a finals appearance would not cause the club financial woes if it failed to materalise.

We have never budgeted to make the eight and put those sorts of finances into the budgets each year, he said.

If we do (make the eight) then thats a bonus.

The Tigers meanwhile have almost finished their multi-million dollar renovations to their traditional home at Punt Road.

The new-look Richmond training and administrative base will include an upgraded gym, new offices and even an indoor 25 metre pool for the players.

Casey said despite the cost of the renovations being more $4 million the upgrade of the Punt Road Oval had not affected the Tigers bottom line.

The Tigers share of the renovation costs was paid for by contributions from members and supporters to the clubs Jack Dyer Foundation while the club also received funding from the Melbourne City Council and the AFL through the Tigers share of the money raised from the sale of Waverley Park.

Now the club is searching for a new chief executive with Casey saying the person appointed may not necessarily have already worked within the football industry.

It could be someone from inside or outside of the industry, he said.

After getting the football department to the point it is at (with the respected Greg Miller running that area of the club) we need someone to lead the rest of the club, the administration and the marketing areas.

While the start of the home and away season is just a fortnight away, Casey who has been acting as the clubs CEO for the past few months said the club would not be rushed into making an appointment.

Ill continue working within the club until such time we make the appointment, he said.

We are not going to take the best person available - we are going to wait until we find the right person.
