Frawley’s Failures v Wallace’s Waste of Spacers.

I like this post Gold - a few things also need to be kept in mind which for mine only reaffirm Wallace is miles in front of Spud;

- due to the poor list left from Spud (including but not limited too the names you mentioned) Wallace was only able to make a certain number of changes to the list p/year. Our list is largely 23 and under so we needed the likes of McMahon, Cousins and even Graham to assist in the development of the kids. You can't just play all kids - they would get smashed and it wouldn't do their confidence any good!

Now I can hear the groans regarding McMahon but reality is he is in poor touch and often looks worse when we loose - he is still young enough and will come back into the side (possibly this week for Bling).

Bling - every recruiter rated him - I would be interested to see how he would play under a coach like Malthouse - he hasn't come on under Wallace but he still has time. Hislop has a crack and could be a good work horse - cost us a 3rd round pick.

Now I don't personally like the Wallace game style but at least whoever takes over will have players (not high picks) like Foley, Moore, Newman, Tuck, Morton, White and more to work with - also high picks like Cothin, Lids, Connors (not so high), Hughes, Patto....

Our list is in better shape then when Spud departed - reality is his poor list management set us back 3 + more years as it takes at least 3-4 to turn over a bad list...

Hawthorn and Carlton were both behind us 5 years ago in terms of list management but stuck to their 5 year plan and sacrificed short term gain and their ego’s for long term gain. Something we have not been prepared to do. The bad news is that this is no longer an option even if we wanted to do it with the Gold Coast and West Sydney coming in.

So given that Miller had so much to do with List Mgt in both eras why do you continue to support him and criticise March for getting rid of him?

What I critcised with respect to the Miller sacking and rightly so was the following:

1. The timing: We were on the verge of finals and hence risked derailing our season. The March / Free footy department review should have happened either 6 months earlier or 2 months later.

2. The process: Why did we sack him before we had someone else lined up? I called it amateur hour at the time from March and the Board and it proved to be the case. Made zero sense sacking Miller to replace him with Craig Cameron 3 months later.

The whole process / affair was a sad indictment on the senior management and Board of the club. Miller despite his list management faults which I have never protected him for was a tireless and passionate worker for the club, and deserved much better treatment and respect that what he recieved at the end.

The handling of that whole affair has no doubt hurt us. In all likelihood it would have had a big impact on why no respectable external candidates wanted his job.

Agree on the timing, although didn't it get out earllier than intended and not in the manner intended? As for lining up someone to replace him they simply couldn't, Miller would find out about the search plus candidates would not want to apply behind his back in the insular world of AFL.

Did I miss anyone?
Think you may have missed Blumfield from 2002, same year as Johnson. Traded for pick 28 to Essendon, but they drafted Cartledge, who we recruited a year after they delisted him.

If it wasn't so tragic it would be hilarious. :P
