PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I read a report in the age on free agency for players based on years of service. 6-8 years (ie when they are in their prime) they can walk to any club at the end of their contract.

There are many things that dont work about the draft, the trading period etc, however this move would be a tremendous backwards step.

The NBA has a similar system and it is AWFUL! In fact the whole NBA trading system is pretty awful. As much as ours is not good for player movement at least we don't have the loyalty issues the NBA teams have. (It would take up pages to describe how bad the NBA system is...so I won't bore you.)

That said, more player choice is probably required , but to create a choice between options they need to bring in a counterbalance, such as special long service benefits for 10 years + payed by the AFL.

Now as for the draft system. It definatley needs an overhaul as well. Drafting should be based on performance over a number of years, less so this year. That would erradicate any talk of tanking in it's tracks.
