The herald today brought up the issue of Free Agency where players can move to other clubs of their choice after a certain amount of time. It is something being looked at by the AFLPA

Personally I don't like the idea, teams will pay big dollars for some players and it could end up like NBA where you don't know who is playing for which team.

What does everyone think about it?

Don't like the idea, but then I have not read anything about it so maybe I will reserve my judgement until I have read up on it :P

I'm against it to. Smacks of the 10 year rule that won North their first couple of flags. ANd th AFLPA are pushing for 7 years only.

The fear is that the AFLPA is quite a strong body these days and Vlad used to head it up so has a soft spot for it.

Good idea,If players serve for a good length at 1 club they should be allowed to go to their club of choice as long as the club losing the player receives some sort of compensation.

IMO
An out of contract player, should I have some involvement at where he ends up.
So I'm thinking that free trade isnt a bad idea.
So long as the salary cap is still in place

Agreed Moneybags.I have no problem with the idea of a long term one club player could have the oppotunity to play elsewhere of his choice should he choose that path. Most are at the club from17-18 so a 10yr rule which would take him to 28 sounds reasonable and fair. However as you said the club that he is leaving should be fairly compensated for their loss.An AFL appointed mediator may have to be part of the agreement.

What, you two thinking of drafting Haynes, Lappin and Alvey? (and mb does have have the equivalent pay packet - of GM and TW combined)

Independant mediator would not work when assessing the value of a players worth after 7 or 10 years.

Its fair to say I've put in the hard yards & now enjoy the fruits of my hard work.In respect to free agency the players need to give long service. This would not include the hacks you mentioned.
