It's funny how short people's memories are, the changes to draft week last year resulted in the most active trade week in quite some time. The change where you don't have to use a pick that you've traded having the most effect.
That still only represent a mobility rate of 3%, though. That's low in anyone's language. This year's is less than one percent. That's abysmal.

i dont see anything wrong with the system we have, can anyone name one uncontracted player who didnt get to move.

Essendon were looking at moving on Andrew Lovett, he agreed to go. Nothing happened.
Daniel Harris wanted out, North were happy to accomodate. Nothing happened.
Ryan O'Keefe, a long-time servant of Sydney, wanted to come home after his contract expired. Nothing's happened so far.
In 06, Bret Thornton was out of contract, wanted to play for Hawthorn. Nothing happened.

if players have contracts they should honour them. i have no doubt that in time free for all free agency will kill many clubs off.
Why? We have a draft. We have a salary cap. What's so inherently wrong in allowing an uncontracted player having served x amount of qualifying years from moving to the club of his choice, subject to the salary cap?

IMO, clubs overvalue draft picks because it's the only unencumbered way to get talent into a club. That state of affairs exists in large part due to the fact that very few trades get done because draft picks are deemed so valuable. Chicken and egg stuff.

What's needed is another mechanism for getting talent into a club, releasing the death-grip draft picks have on player mobility. That mechanism is some form of free agency.
