PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Attended training this morning – thought I’d post some observations…

Interestingly – this is the first time I have attended a Friday training session post Wallace, and the difference was marked…

Under Wallace the boys pretty much just jogged around and kicked it to themselves – today was far more professional, upbeat and meaningful.

Kick to kick, followed by stretches, run throughs and then into handball and kicking drills… All drills where predominantly overseen by WC, Jade was walking around talking to the boys individually… For what this comment is worth, David Kind and Brian Royal pretty much had no involvement beyond kicking the ball to one another and just chatting and laughing between themselves and other helpers / medical staff.

About 15 minutes spent on Kick out practice (Forwards -v- Backs), Newman took all kicks and the emphasis was on generating movement and options from the kick out…
Every drill was loud and fierce – a lot of chat and encouragement…

Josh Free is currently training with the boys as a potential FS (with Dad on the sidelines) and was involved in all drills. He’s very short – circa Foley height, but interestingly he’s already thick through the torso and also the legs… His kicking was fine, although it lacked any real penetration (probably more than 40 meters…)

Richo joined the main group and was the only player training who isn’t listed in the team / emergencies for the weekend – he looked fit and keen to be out there – incidentally kicked five straight from the pocket / boundary line circa 50 meters out…

Overall observation – we certainly don’t train like we’ve only won 3 games this year.

And for the conspiracy theorists out there regarding Deledio and Thursfield (supposedly wanting trades) – these guys looked as happy and enthusiastic as anyone out there… The amount of back slapping and encouragement and laughter out there – you certainly could fault the enthusiasm…
Training wrapped up once the boys kicked 5 goals each… On this, Tony Free was getting into Josh ear and telling him to get closer to the boundary line (he was only 3 meters in to start with – told him to get on the boundary line and keep putting them through…

And without leaving the Cotch out - he was the loudest and most encouraging out there... Demanded the ball and ran harder than anyone...
