From what I have seen so far my side for Round 1.

NEWMAN THURSFIELD MOORE

MC MAHON MGUANE RAINES

RICHARDSON TUCK DELIDIO

COUSINS SHCHULTZ TAMBLING

MORTON REIWOLDT BROWN

SIMMONDS FOLEY JACKSON

GRAHAM POLO WHITE BOWDEN/EDWARDS

EMERG: THOMSON RANCE CONNORS EDWARDS/BOWDEN

i have to ask what has been the deficiencies in our team.

1/ the ability to tackle effectively this comes down to a degree player size in general..

2/ player size generally we have had to few big bodies in most positions this impacts many areas of the game.

3/ the lack of key forwards most talk about it but it seems dont acknowledge it. we regularly go into games with just two talls forward and on numerous occasions with just one. your 3 talls that you should have and most teams do have work as a team within a team we have rarely ever had this

4/ the biggest single factor kicking skills across the team. every week we play 10 or 12 very ordinary kicks when the most we should be carrying is 2 or at worst 4. those who cant kick must bring other very strong attributes to the team ie richo and tuck.to top this of many of the better kicks are poor decision makers or are deficient in other areas.

5/ team structure we regularly have gone into games without enough blokes who can win their own ball we dont have enough inside winners we regularly go in short especially up forward we regularly go in undersized down back.and yeah we do okay down back but this should not mean we dont try to impove obvious structural weaknesses.

6/ the lack of 1percenters we have to few who work for the team and their mates.and again those that do have chronic unforgivable deficiencies.an example was jake king. if had some size and good foot skills he would be a player but because he doesnt he had to wait until 22 before he got picked and then by a club who has a chronic history of picking poor kicks.
king bought to the table things that were lacking still are imo pace courage harassment attempted tackling pressure on the ball carrier . but his size and kicking skills have quickly seen him caught out and hes become more of a liability than an assett.
no gut running to give an option little shepherding blocking tackling little of anything really. that sums us up in this area.

i have seen few selected sides on this thread that actually addresses these things. these things have been there for yrs and it is time we did something about them.

personally when wallace has an attitude of you work mainly on your strengths and strive to improve them at the expense of allowing players to ignore chronic deficiency its little wonder we continue to play footballers who are chronically deficient.

I will dead set spew if King or White (even Nahas at this point) get in the 22 before Polo,Thomson or Collins
agreed CC raines as well. the question has to be asked how many butchers of the ball are we going to play every week.
play to many and it wont matter how much endevour you play with you will still get beaten.

i have heard that too oh great one.
does not work in the modern game.
all-round players who can do it all
and have one or 2 elite attributes
are required. guys with wholes in
there makeup get exploited too easily
with all the improvements in skill,
fitness, stratergy, planning etc

B. Newman, Moore, Rance
HB. McMahon, Thursfield, King
C. Richardson, Foley, Cousins
HF. Brown, Riewoldt, White
F. Morton, Deledio, Edwards
R. Simmonds, Tuck, Jackson (tagger)

I. Tambling, Bowden, Graham, Polo

A few points to make:

-People who think that McMahon isnt a walk up start are kidding themselves, we arent near skillfull enough to leave him out despite his deficiencies
-Deledio could be a great option in a dynamic, ever changing forward line, he is tall, strong, fast and has superb hands. I feel we dont have a key forward who will kick heaps of goals so they must be spread around and the structure shoul be changed to keep the opposition guessing (ala Richo at ff sometimes)
-Bowden is composed enough and versatile enough to get a game

My big question for all you punt road enders out there is who deserves a game first out of Raines or King.

Both lack badly needed skills
Raines seems to get himself into massive trouble
Both players can carry the ball (remember how many bounces King had 2008 v the Dogs)
Both players can be exposed one on one

I feel at this stage that King gets the nod, but then again I am always a sucker for a trier

TW will pick the following side by the look of his planning to date.

Raines Thursfield Moore
Newman McGuanne McMahon
Cousins Deledio Jackson
Richardson Riewolt Morton
Brown Schulz Bowden
Simmo Tuck Foley
Graham, plus 3 from Tambling, Thompson, White, Polo, Edwards, Connors

Emerg- Post, Rance, Vickery

I think the above team down to Graham is already locked in.

not kidding myself at all hes a turn over merchant by foot especially under pressure along with other deficiencies its a must he is not selected. it wont happen though wallace will pick him no matter what.
you go on about king and raines and their skills but ignore mcmahons. as far as turnovers go mcmahon is as bad as both at least the other two actually compete and have a defensive side to their games.

while we have your mcmahons raines kings whites mcguanes all in the backline we will lose more than we win.

the best footballer no let me rephrase the most highly rated player atm in the country plays at half back that being luke hodge. i see no reason why deledio cannot be just as influential in games playing of hb.

you bemoan the lack of key forwards and one that can kick heaps of goals we have one we just dont play him there anymore and we dont play him right when he is there.
you have white and edwards in the forward half. ive been kind to these two so far but i have to say so far this off season ive been appaled with both of them and their kicking skills if players of this type cant kick well there is no place for them in any team.

anyway in answer to your question who to pick out of raines and king to play in the backline well you answer your own question. neither is quite obvious.l no skills no smarts struggle one on one and undersized how many deficiencies are you prepared to allow.

ive watched a few of geelongs games hawthorns from recent yrs and if we pick our favorite players who have deficiencies we will get killed. ball use is chalk and cheese as was shown against collingwood in the nab cup. with so many schiezenhausen kicks in the team we are in trouble before a ball has been bounced.

Claw, given that the list we have for 2009 is already determined (and all its flaws have been so well documented by you) can you hazard a guess at what might be the best side we could pick for round one given that this is the topic of this thread...
Here's my go...
Tambling Moore Thursfield
Newman Mcguanne McMahon
Richo Tuck Cousins
Morton Schulz Brown
Edwards Reiwolt Bowden
Simmo Foley Deledio
Int: Thomson Graham Jackson Polo

I reckon this will be close to the team that's selected:

B Newman Moore Thursfield
HB McMahon McGuanne Raines
C Deledio Tuck Richo
HF Cousins Riewoldt Morton
F Brown Schulz Bowden
R Simmonds Jackson Foley
Int Graham Tambling White Polo.

My team would be pretty much the same but I think Polo and Jackson are playing for the same spot, and given current form I would give Polo the nod!

I would give White the other spot on the bench. Would like to squeeze Rance in there some where too but can't seem to do it :-\
