PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Did anyone else see the following article on Paul Roos's opinion on the use & importance of AFL statistics.

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,21756739%255E19773,00.html

In it Roos is quoted as -

"So many of the statistics we get are flawed because of the way they are collected," he said. "We've done an analysis on kicking efficiency and you'd be staggered to see what is considered to be an ineffective kick. It's amazing."

"Let's say the ball is hit down by Darren Jolly and it goes to Brett Kirk. Kirk has a bloke hanging off him and he kicks it forward. There's a one-on-one contest, the ball is dropped by Barry Hall and it rolls out of bounds. That's deemed an ineffective kick, which is ridiculous."

"Unfortunately they don't tell the true picture of what's happening in a game. And we've found a lot of statistics aren't accurate, anyway"

Makes interesting reading by one of the most respected current coaches. If anyone could be advantaged by these stats it would be these guys. The fact that Roos has totally dissed the importance & validity of them is overwhelming.

To think that some on this site treat them as crucial in finding out a players worth & ability is again shown out as pure folly.

Its further evidence that there's no substitute for watching guys play in the flesh & forming your own observations of these players when under "match" pressure.
