Game day match thread V Sydney

Just thought I'd make the comment, yesterday's disastrous performance actually started last week against Essendon. Whilst it was easy to watch the scoreboard last week ticking over in the first half, I thought Richmond were ordinary for most of the game. Go back and watch the Dons game carefully and watch our disposal that wasn't exactly descisive, but we managed to get away with it beacuse Essendon were terrible.
Yesterday, we seemed to bring that same approach to the SCG and caught a Sydney team on full alert w.r.t Richmond's previous performance.

Two years ago, I watched the same team smash the Tigers at Telstra Dome. It might have been different on this day, cause we were depleted with injuries and guys like McGuane were trying to stop players like Hall.
But, rather than harping on the performances (and to some extent) the results of the last 6 weeks, there are some major questions that need to be asked. I talk about the process as opposed to the results, which always seems to please Richmond supporters.

Yesterday's inept performance may well seem to you as the rebuilding process or journey for the Tigers, but from what I saw, a dozen footballers in our team playing yesterday will only tease and please Richmond supporters on brief occassions. 1/2 doz. deserve to be playing in better sides and the others...well, lets just say there not a footballer's *smile*.

Edit - please don't avoid the swear filter

Good post well said.

agree well said. it seems theres some deluded ferals who were quite happy with our error riddled first half in that game.

No-one's deluded. If we can play an error-riddled game and find ourselves 50 point sup then that has to be a positive. I'd rather take a win and celebrate it then get all huffed and puffed whether we win or lose. Life must be a real strain for you Clawsey.

no ones deluded coulda fooled me.
sometimes you lose and theres positives sometimes you win and theres none. you should not let the fact that you won a game in very ordinary circumstances delude you into thinking that theres been any real improvement. what were the positives from the essendon game goodie oh thats right we won havent done that in awhile.
people have to come to terms with the fact that for us and where we are at it is not about winning.

I can't agree.

What is the average player salary? $200,000? For that sort of money, checking to ensure you have the right boots is the most basic of minimum requirements.

But the bigger issue is accountability. Wallace is trying to build a team where every individual if responsible for the greater well-being of the group.

The reigning premiers are an example of an accountable team. They work their guts out on the field for each other, and expect the same off the field. The Steve Johnson suspension is the example.

That is what Wallace is trying to instill in the group. If the players need to be told when to wipe their own butts - we are not going to develop as a team.

Ensuring you have the correct footwear is about the team, and if the players can't get that right, it might be indicative of a unit that has a long way to develop.

I fully agree with your team spirit call, 'Chook. Great observation. And that players are accountable for their errors. But who are they accountable to? Is it us? Is that why it's a media issue?

I don't have a problem with him fining them a match payment for the offence. But this is just another Terry Wallace public blame shifting exercise IMO.

BTW six grand a week easy for a senior player. Not per game. Per week. And many of em can't tie their shoelaces much less match the boots to the bag. But the coach gets twice that to manage them. I don't mind if he checks their boots on the way to the bank. ;D Hours before the press conference.

Never said it was all about winning. That's why I don't get in a knot when we lose like you do, even though you state you want us to tank. We played crap against the Swans, as good as tanking, you should be ecstatic Claws, its right down your alley.

You quickly forget about our encouraging efforts against the current top teams of the competition. Yet against Essendon somehow a large win is the worst we've played. Give me a break. We still have skill issues you see it in every game. We have alot of youngsters who have played less than 50 games, you're going to get inconsistency. It's time this year and next year that we improve in a number of areas. I can see it, my mates can see it, commentators can see it, why are you the only one that can't see it? Yp\ou don't have a Labrador and a white stick do you?

ha what encouraging efforts. geelong won by 30 points in atrocious conditions thompson was right the win was worth 10 goals. hawthorn kicked so badly at goal that under normal circumstances they would have won by 10 plus goals.
we managrd a draw against the dogs the game could easily have been over at quarter time in the end to be fair we put ourselves in a position to win. sydney did to us on the scoreboard that haw geel did to us on the field. what improved in these games was commitment endevour and a little accountability nothing more. you can only go so far trying hard.

the only thing that irks me is we lose these games with shedloads of players who are as weak as *smile* and clearly not up to it. we refuse to replace them because deluded fools a lot like you some how think they can improve.
ya know since wallace has been there we have beaten eventual top 8 teams just 7 times. we may not even improve on that number this yr. when its all done and dusted wallace continues to play blokes lots of em who are not good enough and does little to change it.

Here we go again. Excuses excuses for getting close to our competitors. Yet when you speak of other teams you always seem to have excuses for them. Shoulda, woulda but didn't. Bad kicking means bad footy. If th Tigers lost because of bad kicking that's exactly what you'd be saying. Can read you like a book. Give credit where credit is due or you'll never get credit for anything you say. Just sounds like a permanent whinge.

fact is if those teams had kicked straight we would have copped beltings cant be any fairer than that fact is fact. bad kicking for goal is not bad footy has never been in my book.its just poor finishing usually of good work further up the ground.if it happens week in week out its a problem most teams have a bad day at the office as far as kicking for goals goes.

to get credability you have to win against good sides like i said 7 wins against eventual top 8 sides in wallaces time tells me there is little real improvement going on. good teams beat good sides. also i see you have no comment on this.

lets look at our wins. 64 points against freo a very good win said so at the time. beat carlton and ess in two of the worst games i have seen this yr. good to win yes especially against those sides but sheez there was little to enthuse about other than the wins themself. we showed more in some defeats this yr.

An extra point against Bulldogs, and an extra couple of goals against Hawthorn and suddenly we've beaten the two top sides. Would that have made all the difference because we'd beaten 2 top 8's in 2 weeks? No it wouldn't because we most likely would have still been pumped by Sydney. You see, the peformance against Sydney wasn't typically how we had played in the previous weeks, it's all up there in the grey matter. We weren't prepared for the onslaught and didn't have the experience to recover quick enough. Are we that bad as we played against the Swans, I don't think we are. You think we are, that's your perogative but I could have sworn we won only won 3 games last year and a draw. How many are we after 10 games this season again? So if you don't consider anything else but the scoreboard, we have indeed improved. Now that's a fact you can't argue with. Last year we lost our 4 games to the finalists by a combined 330 points. We are definitely improving in some critical areas such as contested possessions, there are others such as tackling and 1%ers where we still need alot of improvement. I doubt anyone is denying there' alot of areas we can improve in, but that's not your argument, which is that we haven't improved at all because we haven't beaten top 8 sides. That's true, but I think that's a very shallow view to support your argument that we are not improving.

Did any of you darksiders see how well SYDNEY played on SUNDAY?

I think they would have beaten everyone else on that day.

No excuses for our *smile* performance, but geez, get some reality into your posts.

We were beaten by a bloody good side who worked us out and played to the conditions and sorry ground state.

They don't allow the VFL to play on such substandard grounds any more.

Why do the AFL protect SYDNEY so much?

If you honestly don't believe the side has put in encouraging performances for the 6 weeks previous to the Sydney loss then you may as well give up supporting the club now.

now you are dealing in what ifs and ignoring the fact we were out played. goody at least i can look at a game and say the better team won or lost.you seem incapable of this and you have a go at my credability.

we won 10 games in 2005 and 11 in 2006 we beat top 8 sides for a combined 4 games. by your reckoning and your logic we havr gone backwards big time since those yrs.

the only real indicator of improvement is how well you do against the better teams so far this yr you clearly think we have done well and make all sorts of excuses to support your argument. me i think we have been poor. coll geel nm syd haw all clear top 8 sides this yr have all toyed with us. we snuck a draw with the dogs thats probably one of the two wins we have each yr against the better sides.

the simple fact is we improved in a couple of areas for a few games and then reverted to norm.

whats improved at richmond in wallaces time in a nut shell the quality of dud. the overall quality of player has gone up but in the main not enough to make us a good side, or a side good enough to beat the better sides in the comp on a regular basis.and it wont improve while we have so many deficient players on the list.

Perhaps they would have beaten any other side on the day. However, not many other sides would have been 11 goals to nil down nearing the end of the 2nd quarter. That is inexcusable.
