Game Day R21- Those Shocking Frocking Dockers

Agree. We were absolute garbage today.

Even if results go our way, if we play like that next week, we'll get rolled regardless and it will mean jack all.

Totally agree. That was a very poor, but typical, performance from Richmond. All against a sheizenhousen team minus their best player. I guess a win is a win but you'd think they'd put on a better performance than that with the season still alive. It's a real concern that Wallace has not been able to remove these typical RFC traits after 4 years.

I also think the boys would have been on a real high after last week,so a let down of sorts would have been expected.......so great that they won anyway

That's a typical RFC trait. Total lack of consistency from week to week. It's proof that we are still a very ordinary side and won't be a good one until we get rid of that trait, in particular, amongst others.

We were crap, but I think if it had been the first year of Wallace's tenure, we would have folded like a deck of cards and lost by 40pts. Eg With players like Chaffey, Hilton, Kellaway, Tivendale, Gaspar running around for us.

There was a period yesterday where we started to tighten up and were feeling the pressure. We got through it though, and we'll be better for it next time around. We'll do jack in the finals even if we were to make it.

Maybe the younger guys will realise what they need to do next year though if they play finals against someone like Adelaide, and feel the intensity of the action.

Not surprised they had a letdown after the huge game last week.
With eleven or twelve kids in the side that have less than fifty games under their belts it's not surprising to see them struggling with consistency at this time of the year.
I'm hoping the coach injects a couple of new enthusiastic youngsters in for a season finale and rests a couple of seniors against the Dees.
A good long break to refresh the kids and then a big preseason will bring marked improvement to a huge bunch of 19 to 22 y.o. kids.

I guess you must be over the moon with Thursty's nine touches then.

Any other Richmond players that you enjoy seeing play poorly?

I've watched the game a couple of times now. Apart from the late free kick to Johnson, what exactly did Thursfield do wrong?

My post was in response to someone posting that they were pleased McMahon got only 12 possessions.

I haven't had a chance to watch the game again yet but was using Thursty's stats of 9 possessions and 4 clangers.

Really surprised by this call Freezer.

Wil got touched up regularly on the lead by a soon to be retired ex-Bomber who admitdly played well.
but if young Wil was Darren Gaspar, people would be calling for his head after yesterday's game. He's not Gas though obviously and he is still learning the caper but his lack of pace showed yesterday and if he's to play as a third tall defender, then he'll need to be able to do a job on guy's like Johnson.

To my eyes Thursfield's looked slow for much of the season and yesterday was not his best game by a long shot.

Hopefully he'll be better with another pre-season but McGuane and Moore have both shaded him this year. With Rance in development competition for the key back positions will be heating up.

It was more the match-up more than Wills wrong-doing. I mean, wtf is Will doing on a midget in Johnson?

Firstly Thursfield is not in the side to get disposals and secondly, clangers are not always disposal related
They include free kicks against, dropped mark, fumbles, 50m penalties and unforced errors/turnovers.

I've just gone through his game again:

Q1.
18 min 43 secs to go; Eff spoil on Headland
18.34; Effective tackle sees ball OofB.
18.21; Effective HB
17.07; Headland hit on chest on fast lead. Near impossible to stop.
14.52; Effective spoil on Headland
14.05; Murphy hit on lead; Thursfield covering; possibly could've done more.
9.40; soft contest but got away with it
4.32; Effective HB
3.00; Effective spoil on Johnson
2.34; Mark and effective HB
2.20; Effective spoil in pack

Q2.
15.14; Johnson hit on lead; given too much room by Thursfield
14.33; effectively worked Johnson under the ball and guided thru a behind
10.59; outnumbered 1 against 2. Outmarked by Campbell (where was McGuane?) but could've done a fraction better
10.30; Mark and turnover kick. Subsequent 50m against Newman (soft) resulted in goal.
8.52; Poor tackle on Johnson gave away free kick. Luckily kicked out on full
5.00; Johnson hit by unstoppable pass out of centre. Thursfield could not have done more.

Q3.
9.22; Mark and kick to contest
6.43; Outmarked by Sandilands - tough to beat.
6.14; Mark and effective HB
4.50; Effective tap to advantage on centre wing
4.12; Tried to pick up Palmer but couldn't get to contest after just being on outer wing. Looked knackered TBH
3.15; Mark and effective kick
2.65; Mark and effective HB
1.02; Mark and effective kick

Q4.
23.51 minute mark; Free given to Johnson for in the back.

Overall, reasonable. Didn't do a lot wrong. Would be interested to know what they considered the 4 clangers. Looked a bit tired toward the end of the game but Johnson had minimal effect, so Thursfield got his job done IMO. Probably needs to get involved more.

Don't forget he's only played 39 games.

TBH I missed most of the first quarter which appears to be his best and #7's matchup point also cuts him a little slack.
Still reckon it was a poor/ordinary game by Wil overall.

Quite a few of our backs had shockers though.
McMahon - Nuff said.
Moore - Has tapered the past few weeks on the back of an outstanding season.
Schulz - Struggled to have any impact and made some skill errors by foot.

Only really Newman & McGuane were ok.

I thought our ball movement from defence was as bad in that game as it's been all season.
We struggled regularly to clear the ball forward with any effective system whatsoever.
Slow, static, sideways, ugly.

To get back in context, my response wasn't meant to be a criticism of Thursfield, rather it was to address this apparent piece of schadenfreude:
