Game Day - Richmond v Fremantle

One of the biggest issues with this team is the lack of size and strength in our 4 year plus players. Since halfway through the second quarter we have been completely bullied by Freo all over the ground. And as someone posted earlier we actually have a higher average age than them.

Dow, Sonsie, Hugo, Ross, Short, Brown, Banks, are not big enough or strong enough. Lack of size, lack of muscle, lack of intensity in their games. Freo have just broken tackles at will and have absolutely destroyed our players when laying tackles. Even Hopper and Taranto lack in size and strength compared to the Freo mids. They are better than the first lot mentioned in this regard but they’ve been overwhelmed.

We’ve struggled to be competitive since halfway through second quarter and I reckon this is a key reason.
Yep, it's really noticeable but I find that when I look at most teams against us now. Either black is very 'slimmimg' or there are some real questions about our gym program, Maybe RFC puts more priority on stamina, aerobic fitness for 4Q gut running (which our younger players cannot manage yet) but we usually look slighter than the oppo to me.
I was also struck by how their bigs looked so much more powerful than ours: Pearce, Treacy, Voss/Hoss whatever, Cox and they were w/o Jackson who would have had a day out most likely.

Darcy is a plough-horse now and Amiss is patchy still, but these guys really monstered our guys, even TL because they are in their prime and still fast and athletic. Tom blew up and seems to have no spring left (but I'm giving him plenty of time to regain form and match fitness btw).

Lynch ..seriously has looked cooked all year...time to retire and get games into a kid
He's virtually missed 2 years of footy; older too, of course. What are you expecting?
Give him time to find form and fitness; probably a struggle to come back at 100% what he was in our flag sides.

But he will get better. Meanwhile he's offering a target, competitive KPF, taking the hits while the new kids build their bodies and fitness for AFL. Essential.

I know it's going to take time but these smashings are hard to take
But I'm sure that you happily took the 3 flags over 4 years? Who else has done that over the last 10 years?

This is the price you pay for a quick rebuild ... hopefully, instead of another 37 years in the wilderness, or false renewals.

What sort of example are we setting to young players by continuing to give Short games? That last goal was a dead set embarrassment. Not only did he commit a terrible turnover but his effort to win the ball back was as soft as you’d ever see.
Time to play him on the other wing from HRS? At least use his run, evasiveness and kicking - but forcibly train him to stop bombing it in! we can cover a HBF e.g. Smith.

The first half was pretty good. We fell away badly after half time.

It's just going to take time. We addressed the talls last year. We now need to address our running power and skill. We need to draft/trade for our next Houli, Titch, Prestia, Edwards, Lambert, Bolton and Rioli. The likes of Banks, Sonsie, Hugo, Ross ect need to be upgraded and eventually moved on.

I dunno Leon. He’s total lack of defensive capability is a killer and unlike the glory years we have no one who can cover him in that area.

He is now the wrong player in the wrong side and we’d be best to try and offload him to a team that’s in the window. One that thinks they can use his assets whilst also covering his defensive liability. Not sure there is such a team now.

Just got back from the Barossa. Man it was freaking hot out there, boys will sleep well tonight. You know who I hope doesn't sleep well? Umpire #41, what an absolute clown. Still shaking my head on the Rioli HTB after clearly being legged. I was 80 metres away and it was as obvious a free as you will ever see. Thought Hugo was ok today too. Him, Trainor and Moju the positives for me. Oh, and Brown, worked bloody hard.

Terrible miss by that goose. A clear trip even if accidental. Doesn’t matter still a free but not to us of course.

Shouldn't be an excuse, but looking at both change rooms at half time showed most of our players all heated up trying to cool down while Freo players more relaxed.

I'm a miller apologist now? OK then.
Sorry, in frustration, I was a bit harsh, I usually appreciate your posts but you don't seem to tolerate much (even) constructive criticism of the club. You're a dyed-in-the-wool loyalist. Fine, so am I, but my philosophy is that constructive criticism is essential for change and improvement.
I felt from the outset that Miller was wrong for a Treacy type who is a bit of a beast. Miller likes to sit off opponents and use his pace and athleticism to contest late from my observation. He probably doesn't like to play body to body because tall but not that heavy or strong. Miller is a decent defender these days but more you're no.2.
My immediate reaction was that Blight was a far better match - heavier, more contested mark, less athleticism as in run and speed though. Sure, I know that meant someone else to play 2nd ruck/fwd. Probably needed to bring Ryan in; at laest he may have put some pressure on Freo's tall backs. Bauer is just a ball slapper.

I hate this writing-off of Lynch, hate it, sure he's a veteran, sure he's struggled today, but there if life in the old boy yet. At the barest minimum to lead the young players.

Sometimes its as if people want to see the end of a veteran player.
Sometimes it’s fairer to end a career earlier rather than as a broken down hack.

that was awful by RFC after half time and probably the most deflating I've felt this season at the end
structure terrible, fumbly, weird
match day coaching doesn't seem to be a strong point

Nah barking up the wrong tree. Hes got some great games left, but even A half broken down Lynch is still an asset for where we're at..

No I don't like knee-jerk, short term, criticism based on a failure to understand the big picture. Which is the stock-in-trade for most of the gameday threads, I'm fine with criticism.
