Game Day Thread R21 versus StKilda

Agreed. Competitive for pretty much 4 quarters against the 3rd best team in the business. Played an attractive style of play, scored 6 goals in the first quarter against a defence that has conceded this many in a quarter only a handful of times over the past few years, and took risks.

Those risks ended up costing us the game through turnovers, but they also set up a lot of scoring opportunities. A lot to like, particularly following on from last week's non-competitive effort.

We spread just about the best we have all year IMO. The football we played matched if for much of the game with the Aints.
Given it's such a young side I was extremely happy with our efforts.
Geez I hate the sense of excitement for fear of being let down but can't help but think Dimma is building something here..

I`m no expert on the game plan but someone said a few weeks ago that Dimma had only implemented phase 1 of an eventual 3 part game plan so far this season.

I guess that would have been the defensive phase which served us so well when we had our run of wins.

I have lamented for a long time that we don`t run and spread like other teams so could the Saints game have been the start of phase 2 of our game plan being implemented?

We did seem to run and spread more in that game and kicked a reasonable score against a pretty good team.

even though we turned it over a few times, we constantly tried to cut back into the middle. and didn't stop trying. also more run to receive and risk taking. good signs. as a rule of thumb we need to constantly do this even if we stuff up. the last thing we want is the players going into their shell and playing safe football.

Agree. The idea was correct. If we aren't good enough to do it yet, that's fine. Just keep doing the right things.

No Jackson and Tuck getting less of the ball...

Makes a huge difference. And the Chimp was back in the mix. He makes a massive difference to the stlyle that is played. Have to upgrade Tuck and Jackson.

It sure does make a difference. I said to a mate on Saturday that it seems every time Tucky gets the ball, what started off as a promising passage of play either falls down completely, or slows down.

Hopefully Foley squeezes one of those two out next year, althouhg his disposal by foot is not great either.

His disposal is fine when he's not playing with an ankle full of pain killing injections

do you read anything into the fact without jackson our tackles were down, we were beaten in clearances, beaten in contested possession and 2 opposition midfielders were left to rack up over 35 possies?

Clearances & contested possessions will improve over time as our young midfielders continue to mature & as we also add to them with quality over the coming drafts.

Ball movement is the number one thing to look for, for us to make inroads, shutting down opposition players can come later when winning games becomes more vital. (Not that Jackson has had much value doing that this season).

Said for a long long time that having both Jackson & Tuck as part of our midfield makes us far to stagnant at a time when learning attacking patterns should be a very high priority. Unfortunately they dont make good quick decisions with the ball.

One of them leysy can see reasons for as they can give a bit a chop-out & hard body. Two - No Way.
Personally wouldnt have re-signed Tuck, we will look so much better when we add more run in our team by having one of them out.

The ongoing presence of Tuck as a key midfielder in our team is to me a reflection less on Tuck but on the failure to find a better option. Obviously Foley’s fitness and pick 6 will have a role in improving our midfield rotation.

A possible factor in all of this is our rucks, who as much as it hurts to say it, have been the worst in the AFL this year in taps. When you never know where the ball is going it requires combative types like Tuck and Jackson to win the ball off the opposition. If we have more control of the ruck contests it will possibly allow us to play more outside players on ball.

Agree daisy, if it rained every week and was 1975 Tucky would be a gun.
I don't think he's improved much at all and hope he's put on the table again.

Hardwick gave Tuck massive praises this morning. He said you got to give credit to someone who has worked hard and said he has finished 6 times in the top 10 of our B&F.

Thanks to Rhett Bartlett who has this documented on his website - http://www.rhettrospective.com/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php.

Pumping up his value? ;D
Tucky gives it his all no doubt but there's a reason we're not playing finals.
