Game Day Thread - Rd 1 vs Carlton

Marchbank looks more Dave Astbury than Dave Astbury to me.

Even has the butchered across the goal short pass.

Which, thankfully, Dave seems to have excised from his game
Dave's contested marking was a bit off last night and we really need him to improve. Hope he can keep on the park to get back that great form he showed in first 9 rounds of 2014 averaging over 5 marks per game before another knee injury. He's a couple of cm taller than Marchbank but on last night's game may not have the same spring and judgement...but this is only the start of a long season.

Tackles, Vlastuin 12, Cotchin 8, Reiwoldt 7, Grimes 7, Grigg 6, Griffiths 6....these are figures unheard of previously. Have we finally worked it out? Or is it because we were playing a weak Carlton side?

Whilst only JLT they layed 3 tackles in the 1st Q v the pies a few weeks back. Like to think that's totally revered come next week.!

Slight typo?...I'd prefer it was totally reversed!!

Astbury reminds me of former Hawthorn/St.Kilda defender Russell Morris, takes an eternity to weigh things up before opting for the percentage kick down the line. I put Morris' trait down to the brutal head knock he got from Jim Edmond. Dave just looks out of place.

Yep. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he needs hypnotherapy, 'you are getting sleepy, repeat after me, first option best option'.

You forgot Astbury. agree. Don't think its as fatal as you imply, but agree. We don't need to change the entire personel or anything, well we can't anyway. We need 2 changes. Everyone is a Hunt skeptic, I'm an Ellis skeptic and a bit of a Houli skeptic, others are Conca and K-mac skeptics and fair enough. We need 2 players that can improve disposal back there, might be Vlastuin, Short, Markov or whoever, and we need the existing players to lift.

Agree completely with this. We don't need big changes to the backline, just a reshuffle. Hunt out Markov/Short in, Vlas goes back and Kmac to the wing running between the arcs. Midfield improved , and Floss goes back to doing what he is very good at.

Another year of umpire love? 12 frees for the whole game compared to 25. Thought we had alot of holding the balls against us that Carlton didnt

Watched the replay for 5 minutes while warming up at the gym today. About 12 minutes on the countdown clock in the third quarter. The umpire farce is alive and well. Doesn't help with all the stupid turnovers either. Some things never change. :'(

Did Richmond lose?

Just went AWOL for a while. Lucky we were only playing Carlton. A better club would have smashed us last night. Wouldn't have let us get ahead by as much to begin with and the third quarter would have been, well anyway.

I thought we got caught in carltons press and got a bit wobbly. We lost our structure and kept kicking it to their talls. With our speedy midgets we need to learn to kick it to space to their advantage. Also we allowed their switching to establish itself after the earlier manic forward pressure. Mostly because we had everyone back (ala 2016)

I am pretty rapt with the win. Some dominant periods where we very exciting (the highlight videos are awesome) and plenty of scope to address those periods where we got sucked into carltons game plan. I feel we now have the right type of kids coming into the team to play and compete in modern football. It was similar in style to 2016 dogs

Geez some are never pleased right.

The 3 things I think most wanted to see (other than those that wanted us to lose to get Hardwick sacked) was speed, tackling and an attacking gameplan. We got all of that. Sure we made some mistakes (as we will do) but we also have a relatively inexperienced team also. Even more so if we take out Hunt and put Short or Markov in there as we should do.

Loved our midget fleet in the forward line (and whilst not a midget I will include Vlastuin in there as his tackling and pressure all around the ground, including the F50 was excellent), Nanks marking was awesome, Prestia will become a crowd favourite and Dusty, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW. Please back that up against the Pies next week.

I really like Butler and Castagna up there. Its ironic that some on here have been crowing about wanting our players to play with more freedom instead of a stodgy, boring and structured approach and then winge when everything they try doesn't come off. I thought they were both excellent, and Butler particularly looks like a very smart footballer. A few times there where others would have blazed up, he lowered his eyes and just picked out the right kick.

Griffiths needs to buck his ideas up though particularly if Chol can start the season well.

With the exception of the third quarter, it was a thoroughly enjoyable game and a vast improvement on last year's style of play. I did have a chuckle when Cotch (I think it was him) handballed straight to a Scum player who had called his name (that was the funny part) which led to a goal for them (that was not funny). Dusty was amazing.

I reckon it might have been Sam Lloyd toigs? Twice.

I'll be keeping my powder dry until I see a clear improvement in the way we work the ball by hand with hard running and spread leading to cleaner forward entries. It's good that we are playing a quicker more urgent style but this can really backfire against the top teams if we don't look to improve our overall system. Kick and hope can only get you so far.

Happy with the change to our forwardline; our biggest weakness is now the HBF. Really need some class users in there to allow us to 1. Escape from D50 when the opposition is applying a strong forward press
2. Provide more dangerous F50 entries when we are applying our forward press and the opposition hoofs it long to clear the ball. 3. Improve our ball movement during kick ins (we are far too often forced to kick long to a contest).

We also need some speed to help defend when we turn it over in the middle of the ground.

Short and Markov need to come into he side.

The one on the MCC members wing was definitely Cotch, it happened right in front of me.

fair enough. i didnt see it on the tele.

Ok, my thoughts on last night.

Firstly, only the scoreboard means anything. The rest is just stuff and nonsense for us to talk about.

Secondly, I am not sure about Carlton and their direction, which made the game a tad meaningless. For a team that is supposedly rebuilding, they seem to have a lot of old codgers running around. Half the team that took the field last night is closer to the end of their careers than to the start. What’s worse, with the exception of Murphy and Gibbs, the rest give questionable value. Their rebuild is nothing like St Kilda’s who rebuilt around Nick Riewoldt, Montagna and Dempster. These guys are rebuilding around duds like Rowe, White and Armfield. Good luck with that. Weitering and Silvagni looked good though.

Where has this all-tackling, all-smothering, all-pressuring, all-hard-running, all high-intensity unit come from? What has happened to the corralling, static, short-passing, passive team that we knew so well? Hardwick says he told them to enjoy their footy. Really? Last night they were not about enjoyment, they were up for the fight. Everyone was switched on and was ready to go. Long may this last. It is amazing what people can do when they are motivated to actually try hard.

Prestia? Yep. Loved his game. Dusty? Gone to a new level. Caddy? I like him as a player. Needs to do a tad more though. Rioli? Star. Butler and Castagna? Works in progress but solid start to the year from both boys. Nankervis? Yes please. Can we find another one just like him? Conca and Ellis? I like them both in defence. Thousands don’t but haters gotz to hate.

Whilst, there are some positive signs, there are also some concerns. Astbury went back into his shell after his early turnover and was too careful for the rest of the game. Griffiths is still an 8-12 possession player when he needs to be a 12-15 possession player. Sam Lloyd doesn’t float my boat in the team. Yes, he is a natural footballer, yes he kicks good goals with some consistency. Way too slow though and, like Griffiths, he is five possessions a week short of being dangerous.

Vlastuin is confident and assured in defence but looks like a computer geek lost in the Playboy mansion forward of centre. McIntosh does it all in the back line but his disposal is heart-in mouth stuff. All things considered, he will give better value in the midfield. Sooner or later, Vlastuin will have to move back and McIntosh will have to move forward. Taylor Hunt, why do they feel that it is necessary to torture us like this? Have we not suffered enough?

Nonetheless, there appears to a good bunch snapping at their heels in the VFL, which can only be a good thing.

My final thought is this. If someone told me last weekend that Jack was going to be largely ineffectual, Cotch and Edwards were going to drift out of the game after quarter time, Miles wasn’t going to even play and Rance was going to be putrid, I would have been considering my options vis a vis my Thursday night entertainment choices and which one I should ultimately decide to take. Lucky I didn’t know.

Now that’s a positive.
