Game Day Thread - Rd 1 vs Carlton

Watched the replay for 5 minutes while warming up at the gym today. About 12 minutes on the countdown clock in the third quarter. The umpire farce is alive and well. Doesn't help with all the stupid turnovers either. Some things never change. :'(

Was 11 to 10 free kicks at that stage and ends up 25 to 12. Some wierd stuff happening after that time.

My final thought is this. If someone told me last weekend that Jack was going to be largely ineffectual, Cotch and Edwards were going to drift out of the game after quarter time, Miles wasn’t going to even play and Rance was going to be putrid, I would have been considering my options vis a vis my Thursday night entertainment choices and which one I should ultimately decide to take. Lucky I didn’t know.

Now that’s a positive.

Very good point.

Umpiring was *smile* and the free kicks after half time certainly confirms the impression I had at the game.

Interesting pressure acts stats:

Vlastuin 21, Castagna 18, Edwards 17, Rioli 17, Rewioldt 16, Cotchin 16. Notice where the majority of the pressure is coming from? In the forward line. There has been a major push this year to force high pressure in the forward line. Interestingly at the other end of the scale the lowest for pressure acts were: Astbury 5, Ellis 6, Hunt 7, McIntosh 8, Rance 8 (he's usually through the roof in this area), Conca 9. All backmen.

Not sure about the Marchbank hype either. The guy can't kick for peanuts and made several bad decisions which resulted in at least 4-5 goals for us.

I sat next to a Blues mate who warned me about him before the match and he was right.

This is just an aside but I thought it was funny enough to share with you fine people.

Tripple M stated this morning that our banner should have read:

"A FEW YEARS AGO CARLTON SHOWED PROMISE.

THEN THEY GOT MALTHOUSE AND THOMAS."

C'mon Gerard lift your game ;D

Quality overall assessment TOT70.

Plenty to like during the game plus a few tense moments waiting to see if we'd collapse in a gibbering mess.

Who'd have thought the Tiges could somehow manage a twenty goal performance with so many key players just barely influencing the game.

Looks like the power may have been cranked up a notch or two on the roller coaster this year. Side plays like this every week it should be one hell of an entertaining ride, win lose or draw.

Ok, my thoughts on last night.

Where has this all-tackling, all-smothering, all-pressuring, all-hard-running, all high-intensity unit come from? What has happened to the corralling, static, short-passing, passive team that we knew so well?
We went and got Blake Caracella who is tactically sound with a good game plan.

We had a few Carlton supporters around us bagging Murphy all day.
I have never worked out why he hasn't reached the heights he should have as a player because he is highly skilled.

Without Kruezer and Murphy it would have been a 100 point blowout.

Maybe Murph can do a Deledio and join us next year?

Castagna and Butler were unlucky not to win the Rising Star, Sam Powell Pepper won it with very similar numbers.

Unsuccessful team syndrome. Murphy's been a very good player but isn't the aggressive captain most supporters want. But there was no-one else.

Thought the same thing. But then you take into the account the football world's understandable skepticism about Richmond plus SPP did it against a premiership favourite and our kids did against a wooden spoon favourite and I guess it is a reasonable decision.
