Game day Tigers v Blues

Another interesting fact out of the game was we actually had 6 boys sing the theme song for the first time.
3 on debut is pretty easy.
Any takers on the other 3?

Blight Game 4.
Steely Game 7.
Trezise Game 9.
(Thank God 24 is over)

Also quick note on Blight.
He is a beast. Just a mountain of a man. Could be anything.

Geez we have some exciting prospects.
Tipping West Coast are already in his ear.

They surely knew about him but probably didnt rate him enough.

I reckon theyd prefer him at CHB now to Ginbey.

Miller. Ross yze all appeared
Readers of PRE would think that they all should be in the Wombat thirds

miller got 4th best player on the ground by one of the coaches. The other coach gave 4th best to Taranto.

I wonder which coach gave miller the 4th best?

Who cares as he played a great game on a top line forward with his mate Blight going down.

I've been thinking the same thing. I reckon some of these boys have been understandably living in the shadow of our all time greats. It's their time to step-up now and last night was hopefully just the start.
McIntosh and Hopper particularly well.
Hoppers best game. And Macintosh’s best game for at least a year.

I have re watched the game on replay and enjoyed the part in the fourth quarter when Hopper was standing as a block just inside the 50 when the blues guy kicked the ball straight at Hopper. He didn't move a muscle till the ball hit him on the chest then he kicked the goal. You don't get many that way
Especially when you set off at a 30 degree angle to your target!
Seriously difficult to see how a pro who has been in the game for most of his life
could kick so baddd!

Might be a way to get another 2nd rounder.

We will have a ton of his type by the end of year - Miller, Gibcus ,Trainor, Young, Kosi and Blight

I care very much about the coaches votes and the best and fairest votes - much more than brownlows or media votes

I like trying to determine how the coaches votes, particularly the Richmond's coaches votes

Unpacking the game after watching the tape and the numbers. Some obs:

  • We won the game largely off the back of pressure. We had 7 of the highest 9 pressure players on ground - In order: Dow, McIntosh, Nank, Campbell, Green, Short and Taranto. Some of those names will come scrutiny as the year goes on - But NONE of those will be dropped this week.
  • This pressure saw us win the game off turnover. Outscoring Carlton 9.1.55 to 4.10.34
  • Until we grow our running game/talent - when we play better ball movement teams that spread better than Carlton we will still struggle.
  • Lost ground ball 106-115 and post clearance possession 85-99 and post clearance ground ball 62-77. Not sustainable. But we all know that's the area Blair needs to focus at end of year.
  • Running bounces lost 2-10 which also shows we need more line breaking players. Again, we know that.
  • Great coaching performance to win us that game on the back of numbers you would normally lose.

Good insight Brian. The game had a bit of a rope a dope feel about it.

Good post Leysy - pressure is king. And one of the key ingredients to pressure is the ability to run harder and longer than your opponent. The best thing I got from the win was our ability to run hard and apply pressure late in the game. The game is so much easier when you have gas in the tank and energy in the legs.
We have enough senior experienced players (Nank, Lynch, Balta, Taranto, Hopper, Prestia, McIntosh, Vlastuin, Broad, Short) and some lesser experienced emerging players (Ross, Mansell, Miller, Hugo, MJ, Dow, Brown, Banks, Lefau, Campbell etc) to be competitive if our fitness levels are of a good standard and injuries remain low. Our fitness levels the past couple of years have been real poor imo which made us look worse than we really are. A successful new fitness and S&C program can do wonders to a teams fortunes.

Great analysis.

It would be interesting to compare the pressure numbers and ground ball/post clearance possession/post clearance ground ball numbers with 2017 when we were emerging with a new game plan with the cattle capable of executing.
