Game day Tigers v Blues

Saw David Rhys-Jones on a podcast yesterday.

He presented Nick Haynes with the #26 jumper before the match.

Rhys said he wanted to rip the jumper off Haynes' back during the game. :ROFLMAO:

Good insight Brian. The game had a bit of a rope a dope feel about it.

Yeah should have added one more point:

- Considering the volume of football that came down, our back 6 were quite amazing to dominate the Carlton forward line and restrict scoring the way they did.. The challenge will be against teams with better small forwards. Carlton would be bottom 4 in the league in that regard, and the biggest reason they haven't progressed further than they have.

Good post Leysy - pressure is king. And one of the key ingredients to pressure is the ability to run harder and longer than your opponent. The best thing I got from the win was our ability to run hard and apply pressure late in the game. The game is so much easier when you have gas in the tank and energy in the legs.
We have enough senior experienced players (Nank, Lynch, Balta, Taranto, Hopper, Prestia, McIntosh, Vlastuin, Broad, Short) and some lesser experienced emerging players (Ross, Mansell, Miller, Hugo, MJ, Dow, Brown, Banks, Lefau, Campbell etc) to be competitive if our fitness levels are of a good standard and injuries remain low. Our fitness levels the past couple of years have been real poor imo which made us look worse than we really are. A successful new fitness and S&C program can do wonders to a teams fortunes.

Totally H - Kamdyn and Ross being more involved in contests really help in that regard. Both excellent endurance runners who along with Taranto keep on keeping on.

Keep posting about it, but running is such an important part of the game. People talk about elite kicking skills as number 1 reason for ball movement. But Leysy is adamant that running is. Look at our dynasty teams. Not a great kicking side, but probably the best ball movement team the game has seen.

Why? Because our running power was off the charts. When that happens you inevitably have free men for the ball carrier - by hand or foot. It makes hitting your teammates and keeping the possession chain going a million times easier than a static team that struggles to cover the ground so always needing to hit difficult targets. Like you say, Serpell could be a massive changer in that regard. Every player interview over the off-season has gone on about the completely different running drills we are doing.

Back on us, where Leysy expects us to fail and be opened up is against teams that have both endurance and pace. Hawthorn and GWS have prioritised their entire list mgmnt around it and are the best two followed by Geelong. We will grind away but just don't have the explosive players to go with those teams.

Blight Game 4.
...

Also quick note on Blight.
He is a beast. Just a mountain of a man. Could be anything.

Geez we have some exciting prospects.
If I recall correctly he took a while to sign up. He is better than Koschitzki and better than Young. And he teaming with Miller, may well prove talented enough to allow Noah to stay forward.

Unpacking the game after watching the tape and the numbers. Some obs:

  • We won the game largely off the back of pressure. We had 7 of the highest 9 pressure players on ground - In order: Dow, McIntosh, Nank, Campbell, Green, Short and Taranto. Some of those names will come scrutiny as the year goes on - But NONE of those will be dropped this week.
  • This pressure saw us win the game off turnover. Outscoring Carlton 9.1.55 to 4.10.34
  • Until we grow our running game/talent - when we play better ball movement teams that spread better than Carlton we will still struggle.
  • Lost ground ball 106-115 and post clearance possession 85-99 and post clearance ground ball 62-77. Not sustainable. But we all know that's the area Blair needs to focus at end of year.
  • Running bounces lost 2-10 which also shows we need more line breaking players. Again, we know that.
  • Great coaching performance to win us that game on the back of numbers you would normally lose.

Great work Leysy.

Over biggest loss over the summer was D. Rioli. Line breaking half backs are gold in todays football. I was hoping it might have been Smith but he still looks to be well off the pace.

Last Friday's game vs the Bluebaggers was the best and most incisive I have seen Smith. Better, quicker decision making, excellent run and good link up work. Along with his usual strong defensive effort.

I think he gets it.

I reckon it is a combo of fitness and confidence. We couldnt run early, but as the game went on and the scoreboard turned our way we ran more and more. When we beat Sydney last year in rd 3 we outran them from start to finish, but as the losses mounted our running stopped.
We arent a fast team, but i reckon we have guys that can keep on keeping on, if they have the confidence to do it.

Good stuff.

Not expecting people to have these numbers but I was watching on TV and was also following the stats on the AFL site. Whilst we lost stats like contested possession, inside 50s, clearances and turnover what actually happened was that between mid 2nd term to mid final term we won these stats. The last 10 minutes of the game was pure survival with Carlton bombarding their forward 50.

What that said to me is that we can do it and when we do we are very competitive. What we can't do is sustain it for 4 quarters ....yet.

Fortunately, we didn’t have to sustain it against the Blues.

Geez 4 bloody players and the coach in the team of the week, been a few years since we've done that. Some closet Tigers supporter at SEN musta been chubbin up as he picked that side
It’s interesting to me that Nank’s game was rated as highly as it was. I gave him our 4th best as an example because his direct opponent had so much of the ball.
Nank did a lot of good things and got a lot of the ball but TDK was very good for the Baggers as well.
Not sure what others think

Are Carlton fans asking the same question about De Koning? He had a great game, easily Carlton’s best player, but his opponent was fantastic as well plus kicked 2 goals.

I think they cancelled each other out and that worked in our favor because we had more winners elsewhere on the ground.

Not sure if they are asking it.

I guess my point is whether we should discount both their games because their direct opponent played so well.

No Nankervis no win imo. Once again Toby's inside game was enormous.

FFS our dinosaur ruckman accumulated 21 disposals 13 of them contested equal most with Taranto, he had 7 clearances only Taranto with 8 had more, he kicked two goals an equal game high,
He layed 6 tackles only Dow with 9 and Campbell with 7 had more. He was effectively our second best inside mid to Taranto and he had a game high 35 hit outs. He does it most weeks.
Yet here are people complaining about his game yet the same people will defend blokes like McIntosh till the cows come home.

Time for people to acknowledge what he does in games and not what they think he should do.

Oh i didnt see the game till monday. Well done tiges and what a good start for our three debutants.
A great win no one saw that coming especially after getting our arses handed to us in the first half..

It has been fun reading Carlton boards. Long may they languish near the bottom.

Curnow back?? Big risk. Desperation. It's gonna be wet tomorrow night, so talls could be a mistake.
