GAME DAY - Tigers v GWS - another day at the office

It's hard to imagine that any team at this level would ever conciously ease off for some game and they would certainly never admit it.....but I think subconsciously you may be right. If we win every game at the G we take it all don't we? That being so, maybe at the back of their minds, every time they play interstate is a little voice saying....save yourself.

I think there is a bit of that combined with the fact the dimensions of the ground don’t suit us as much , put them together and we get a less dominant performance

I might be weird but I actually think it’s good to have a loss leading into the end of the season. So hard to stay up for a long time... u don’t want to have that loss when it actually counts in a final. As I see it we kicked 10.17 - that’s the game. They are a good side and need to play every game like it’s their last at the moment...and reality is we probably should’ve won in the end. We are still on top. Saints next week. Pies and port lost. Meh.

Hopefully the loss removes a little of the complacency that was clearly evident for significant portions of the game

Have a loss when you know your guaranteed a top 2 finish. We pissed the port game away with using Cotchin as our ruckman for the entire last qtr and last night GWS didn't beat us, they just converted better.
Couldnt hit a target inside 50 to save ourselves
Blokes paid to kick basic 30-40 metre goals coukdnt kick the side of a barn.
Dropping marks all night.
Caddy and Moore should've just stay at the airport
The first chance we get to off load Ellis we need to show him the door.

Just finished watching the game. Had we won that it would have been robbery. How much game time did Bolton get, 15mins?

Certainly some concerns from the loss but need to avoid over-reacting.

Lots of comments on various players, so I'll add mine:
  • Dusty: didn't expect 2017 form to last but he is well down. In the last 2 weeks he has shown glimpses but seems to lack that explosiveness of 2017. He looks slightly injured to me.
  • Bolton: hmm, not sure he is ready for AFL level but wouldn't give up. Possibly needs more time.
  • Brandon Ellis: yeah, had chances, don't think he is AFL material.
  • Castagna: had a horrible night in front of goal but has some credits in the bank so a keeper for me.
  • Moore: I think he has real potential. Likely to be inconsistent early in his career. Same height as Riewoldt so a target up forward. I would persist, likely worth it.

The step up to AFL certainly is large, and with 18 teams it has become so difficult to find back up players to replace those who are injured. Given this I think every team now has to accept that at certain times we all have to field players who are a little below AFL level.

Not sure what game you were watching. It was robbery gws s way. Can't believe we lost this one. More scoring shots more inside 50s more marks inside 50 more tackles inside 50. These are the stats that win us games. Highway robbery all right.

Won't win too many games kicking 10.17 against quality opposition. Or having a forward who gets 8 shots at goal and returns 0.5.

We weren't robbed; we handed it to GWS on a platter.

That said not too much damage done. We keep winning we finish on top. Not that it would be guaranteed but we could probably even drop another game and still finish top 2 which, given how we play outside of Victoria, is all that matters.

Still a little filthy on the game as I hate to be so wasteful up front.

But as the dust settles and other results go our way you just think that maybe a loss to take the air out of the balloon isn’t such a bad thing.

Thank *smile* for the saints this week. And thank *smile* for three training drills to finish the year.

We need to work on our clearance set ups, the game pretty much went to script early fast start from opposition, followed by a slow strangle and us getting to the front by half time. Think we relaxed at that point bled a late goal and then got smashed out of the centre and around the ground where we looked un organised and not ready in time at the contests. WCE form at the MCG is of concern although Nic Nat going down helps.

Not sure of the stats but the impression I get is that our 3rd quarters are an issue. They certainly have been the last 2 games. We had GWS on toast in the 2nd quarter but were so wasteful. We should have been 3 goals up instead of 2 points down.

Then we went to sleep after half time and let them get a break on us that ultimately cost us the game.

We are masters of defensive transition and the creation of turnovers. Absolute geniuses.

But we seriously struggle to handle fast clearances.

GWS had big mids standing at the drop to dish it off. We’re missing two with graham and Conca out. We need to draft another.

You can never have too many mids; especially big ones. Should be drafting 2-3 every year. The midfield is still where the game is generally won.

Said to my son at half time it had the stench of the eagles game about it. Dominated 2nd qtr to get back into the game but didn't get scoreboard reward for effort. The early parts of the 3rd qtr were like the west coast game as well.

With results this weekend, a win would have put us 2 games clear of 3rd and gone a long way to shoring up top 2, but we missed a golden opportunity.

I know this is going to go against the grain but I am not totally unhappy with the result on Saturday night. We lost the game, GWS were cleaner on the night (they always are clean) but we fluffed an eminently winnable game.
I was getting nervous that we would go into the finals without losing a game. It's the one we had to lose. A re-calibration.
We have had three of our top six tacklers out in Graham, Conca and Butler. I think the rest of the team now realises that they too are responsible for pressure, not just leaving it up to theses three extraordinary tacklers. I'm sure we will see a tackling frenzy against the Saints this week.
At the game it was apparent that GWS played most of the game on their terms. It was open and fast. We could not easily get the numbers to the ball which is what we like to do. However I saw nothing from GWS that I think will overly worry us if we meet them in September.

We played terribly, lost by 2 points, could have won the game but for poor goal kicking. Time to move on.

We couldn't kick a goal for the life of us. Games where you miss so many chances you deserve to lose.

So if we kicked straighter it would have been robbery?

heh, brightsider. We were no chance of kicking another goal. If we had kicked 3 more points it would have been robbery.
