GoodOne said:He did some good stuff, sure. No arguments there. I'm not questioning his ability to play loose in defence and set up rebounds. He obviously enjoys doing it, which is why he puts a bit of effort into it.
But I still think it's totally unacceptable for a senior player like him to put his own game ahead of the team's needs. He was given a job on Whitnall, and he ignored it. If he wants do concentrate on the fun stuff and leave the hard work to someone else, let him rack up his wonderful possessions at Coburg.
Had Whitnall kicked straight, there'd be a lot more people agreeing with me.
How do you know what his job was? Maybe he was told to make Whitnall accountable at times but make use of his ability to find the ball wherever possible. Personally I thought Bowden quite often was close to his man when it counted, but it makes it difficult for a backman to counteract when there are a high number of turnovers and poor skills as there were in last night's game. Can make the ball come back very quickly. Bowden is not a natural key-position player and Whitnall has destroyed much more fancied key position players than Bowden. I think its wrong to say he puts his own game ahead of the team's needs. The alternative would be for Bowden to shadow Whitnall every move with a handful of possessions, rather than being the highest position getter in the Richmond side, often pushing through traffic with deft skill and creating many attacking opportunities up the ground. Now why would you do that? The only thing I could think of which would be more silly would be to, lets see, move Whitnall onto Richardson after playing so well in the forward line.
Cheers
You took the words right out of my mouth Good1! Honestly BS, your whole argument is based on how many quarters of footy? If you want to talk hypotheticals speak to Geoffrey Robertson.
Also just wanted to mention the hard work done by Cogs and Tucky - they worked tirelessly last night and kept getting in there and doing what had to be done.
I really love the way the boys are just going in and having a go. Such a different mindset, and look at the results!
And Newmo's marks in the last quarter saved us many times over. Tough under pressure!
I agree with you Heather and Poppa. I thought we played really well considering. I thought our decision making skills and running through the centre and on the wings has improved out of sight, compared to the horrible, negative, defensive way we used to play. We have got so much that we can build on now.
It was a game that had everything - run, contests and and I bet everyone would have been absolutely raving about the game if every Richmond shot for goal had got the six points.
oh well, one day it will all just click. I must admit I'm really enjoying watching how it all comes together. The light at the end of the consistency tunnel seems a hell of a lot closer now, than what it did 1-2 years ago.
