A win's a win. Nth were poor but there were a number of positives to take out of tonight's game for us.
1. Tackling and pressure on the ball carrier were vastly improvedfrom the laughable efforts in the other games I've been to (Carlton and Bulldogs). Funny what happens to the opposition's skill level when they are constantly put under pressure.
2. We do have some talented youngsters in Nahas, Rance and Collins. They are all going to be very good footballers for us. Rance's attack on the ball is excellent. Foot skills need some work and hopefully this will be done. Nahas is the nippy, hard working forward pocket that we've been desperate for. When he starts converting more often, look out. Collins is a footballer.
3. Oakley-Nicholls was better, but I'd like to see him finish off himself occassionally - gets another game next week. Tambling looks better when he works harder - game opens up for him. However even within a game, he still has times when he doesn't work hard enough. I suspect that in junior footy, his natural talent stood out and he could do any number of flashy things due to the lower level of intensity. That's what would have caught the eyes of the recruiters and led to him being a top five pick. However in the AFL, it's much harder for him to make an impact if he's going to coast along. Anyway tonight he looked much better because his work rate was up and his confidence got a lift as a result. Reminded me on a number of occasions of Michael Mitchell, a terrific aboriginal small forward/midfielder from the late 80's (ahead of his time really). Big test is whether Tambling can consistently sustain and hopefully improve on the work rate we saw tonight. I'd given up on him, but if he's prepared to work his guts out week after week, I'll give him one last chance because we still may have a footballer.
4. Graham has finally got a body to match his height and rucked well. I remember last year's game against Nth at the MCG where Mcintosh thrashed Simmonds and Pattison and greatly set up Nth's win. However tonight, Graham more than competed and at least broke even. Certainly worth persevering with for the rest of 2009 and seemed to relish being the No.1 ruckman.
5. Coughlan can still play and has a natural instinct for winning the hard ball. Hopefully his body can hold up. Gives us a genuine hard mid-fielder if he can stay fit and will greatly compliment Cotchin, Cosuins when they come in.
6. Riewoldt worked harder as well and got the reward. Hopefully he also learnt a lesson as one more poor game and it was off to Coburg. Richo's injury highlighted how poorly off we are for big key forwards. Riewoldt is really the lead-up, flashy third tall. It's just that without Richo - we don't have any others. Still think Vickery may be worth a try up forward before the year's out.
7. I didn't get to the Melbourne game (thank goodness), but White was good tonight as opposed to the reports from last week's game- should be continued with.
8. Delidio played like we all want to see him play - elite midfielder who backed his pace and skill and took the game on.
Only negatives:
- McMahon has no idea defensively. While he kicked better tonight rebounding off half-back, he is a liability as a defender. Can't see a spot for him in our best side.
- Turnovers still cost us. Jackson's work rate is very good. However he's slow in terms of footy brains and still makes too many clangers for an elite level midfielder. The turnover just before half time was terrible. He did many good things in tonight's match - but these turnovers still stick in my mind.
In summary, look forward to seeing more of the younger players be given opportunity and game time. No surprise that underperforming/injured Simmonds and Brown went out and win came along.
