The problem as I see it does lie with Terry and his game plan.
The stats are starting to show that up to 70% of our possessions are in the back half. Short kick side ways after short kick side ways and then panic handball or kick resulting in turnovers. Benny Hill football!
I honestly believe we do have a good list (maybe I'm deluded), however no team and I mean no team can win games playing that style of football. This is the style football that frustrates us supporters and in my opinion it's the football that is creating turnovers which are costing us games and making all of our players look bad.
So why do we play this way?
Who is responsible?
In my opinion there is an easy answer to this question and the answer is Terry Wallace. I have been to a number of training sessions this year including closed sessions as well as all games and most preseason games. During the early scratch matches we actually practiced this zoning sideways rubbish. Wallace is obviously trying to copy Hawthorn in reaction to the way that many other clubs are now playing. unfortunately he doesn't have the mechanics of this game plan down pat and we are failing to break the zones horribly. Our players are clearly struggling to work with this structure and are crumbling under pressure. Switching play from one side of the ground to the other is meant to create space and open corridors into the forward line. Yes we do switch from side to side however we are failing to create or find space in the corridors. The reason we can't find space is because we don't have the mechanics right up the ground in terms of player movements. To put it simply our players don't move, they don't lead, they don't even try and at times some have turned their backs on the player with the ball. The player with the ball is then pressured into a panic kick or handball which often results in a turnover.
Who are the culprit players?
Well this answer is quite simple also. It's our midfielders and half forwards! The culprit players in particular would include Tuck (worst culprit), Foley, Morton, Deledio, Tambling, Bowden, Edwards, Simmonds, White and Jackson. In fact we actually create more play with our defenders leaving their opponents. Players like Moore, McGuane, and Newman constantly have to push forward to create options because our so called mid wont create the play. We have relied too much in the past on players like Bowden, Raines and McMahon to run the lines to create the play. This creates even more problems because if there is a turnover then it leaves us wide open which is what happened so badly in the Carlton game. A large majority of Carlton's goals were created because our defenders were up the ground. This is definately not a new problem for us as it's been brewing for the last 3 years. As I've said the reliance on our half backs to be the play makers has taken the accountablilty away from our mids who are now spectating waiting for somebody else to do it for them. They need a major get of your arse and do something rocket! Stop God dame spectating and be the leaders you should be as mids. Terry himself has stated that players go into their shells at times. This is just conceding that they are spectating Terry which is actually what I'm talking about. It's a poor team attitude!
So what needed?
Terry needs to review his bull dust game plan and stop blaming the turnovers on the skills of the players in the back half. He needs to realize that it's the mechanics of his game style that is creating these turnovers. The coaching panel as a whole needs to challenge the leaders of the club and in particular the mids up the ground to MOVE LEAD AND JUST FLIPPING DO SOMETHING INSTEAD OF HOPING SOMEBODY ELSE WILL DO IT! They need to be told it's your responsibilty to create the play up the ground. Run side to side in conjunction with the switching of play to open space. All players need to make it their number 1 priority to go straight up the ground quickly as your first option and only go sideways if there are no options up the ground. Stalling and delaying going sideways and backwards only gives your opposition time to set their zones correctly making it hard to get past. Unfortunately we have been falling into the oppositions traps with stupid Wallace football.
I actually think that we can turn our failures around quickly if our the coaching panel would properly review the cause of the stupid sideways football instead of blaming the players for poor skills.
Yep 70% sideways it's a daming fact!
It's your fault Terry after 5 years because you've let it happen!
