Game thread v. Western Bulldogs

pretty sure it was Brandon who pressured n tackled the Doggy with a free to force a turn over free kick.

That was amazing.

Doggie was flat footed while Ellis just closed him down.

It was like a slow motion train wreck.

Something that Jackson would have done a few years ago ;)

The three "punching bag" players provided the highlights.

Jackson's amazing goal,Vickery's superb mark and Grigg's run and goal.

He was like a deer in the headlights. No one down the ground gave him anything, the umpire called play on. Ellis corralled him and he just had nowhere to go. I saw a few comments after the game by disgruntled Dogs supporters along the lines of we aren't good enough to play finals if we have to work that hard to beat them by only 10 goals. Doesn't say a lot for the Dogs, does it? Not so long ago we were making those comments. It's heartening to see that the Tigers are doing what they need to do. The smashings will come, believe me. First you get the job done, then you get confident and that's when you know you're pushing for top 4 and a GF berth. It's really good to see that even when they manage to cut some of our topliners out, others stepped up to pick up the slack.

Very happy with last nights win. We didn't play that well really yet still smacked the doggies by 10 goals. Quite impressed with both Conca and Ellis's progression as well as some of our lesser lights last night. Thought S. Edwards was a little quite last night, but he was not alone I suppose. The dogs did their homework and held Lids and Cotch well. That stopped a lot of our run and carry but we found other avenues to goal which was good.

Go Tigers!

Shank was a little quieter, but that stop and pick up off the ground early was delightful.

Quite right Lee.
It augurs well that with Cotch & Lids held, the other mids get off the leash, good practice for them learning to take the game on and not rely on Cotch & Lids to get high number of possessions. They have their roles and they must utilise the depth of midfielders we're building. Rotations on match ups and allows us to have a player like Marto or Cotch as dangerous forwards

I reckon 10 goals is a fair slapping. Same with 40 pt wins over potential finals contenders. We've won by about 140 combined in 3 weeks.

wierd game. we got beat in the clearances and the tackle count, but won by 10 goals. 11 tackles in a half is not good enough and good teams will punish us with those numbers. hope we can improve our tackling and clearance work.

Strangely, clearance numbers are being shown as somewhat as a furphy this year Harry.

Big trend in footy. That's why solid back 6 is so important nowadays.

the way we set up with one behind the ball means were usually outnumbered at stoppages... We place more importance in having our plus one behind the ball and rebounding attackingly from half back so clearances arnt the be all and end all for us

yeah, but we wouldn't want to have 11 tackles in a half against a good side

cant really tackle when you've got the ball...

Well at the end of the match they had the same number of disposals as us. 61 tackles (them) 39 tackles (us).
Our tackle numbers were pathetic. Bruise free.

Yep the tackling or lack thereof was the biggest disappointment for mine.

Don't think we will win many games in September having 11 tackles in a half.

I don't think its any coincidence that we played better footy in the second half than we did in the first, given we had more than double the number of tackles in the 2nd.

yeah. functional forward line is crucial as well.

Our forward line looked good this week, but obviously always helps when opposition back line is sub-par.

11 tackles in a half must be a record low.

Corralled n harassed the doggies n let them butcher the ball, all that was needed. Won't get away with it against the top teams, will need a much more physical pressure game. Still learning how to balance the mix of game from run n gun to heavy lock down and all options in between.
